We've had some memorable games against them down the years. I think it was in 1982 that, had we won, we were still in with a chance of promotion and they beat us 2-1 in a night game. I think Lineker scored that day? We've had some cracking Cup ties against them and i think they were the opposition when we opened the East Stand? Joachim and Black Adder's goals in the penalty-decided tie which was featured on Sportsnight - and it was very biased towards Leicester too. They creamed their knickers over Joachim's effort but barely mentioned Archdeacon's wonder goal.

Remember the 82 match well. I believe it was 2-0 to Leicester and Nicky Law and Alan Birch got sent off near the end. It scuppered our hopes good and proper. Came shortly after an Easter game at Grimsby when we were 2-0 at half time and ended up losing 3-2...............the nemesis of Barnsley, Nigel Batch, Grimsby keeper had a stormer in that game.

Hopefully, you didn't miss the festivities mate at Southend? What a day.!!........................Of course, that will all be forgot if we go and balls it up v Palace (typical Bransley?).

Ahh! I recall that bloody Grimsby match very well indeed. We were drinking on the seafront at exactly 11am - the landlord was over the moon when 50 of us trounced into his abode.

I missed the bloody game! :'( Told the Mrs on the Friday evening that i was indeed on my way to Southend the next day. Ended up drinking a full litre of brandy courtesy of Mr Courvoissier along with 14 bottles of Becks. Woke up at 1pm all disorientated - it's the first time the witch has let me have a sleep in in months :((

Great win though, and the old woman was impressed with the Reds' support when we saw the highlights on Sunday.

The Grimsby match made me realise taht football is in fact for most fans all about both good times - and bad times. I was lucky to start watching Barnsley properly from the age of 11 circa 1978. For 4 years we had success after sucess.......2 promotions.....great cup runs etc etc. I didnt realise that it was part of the script that BFC coud fail. I took it as gospel we would go up and be playing the elite in Div 1...........................If we had beat Grimsby we would have gone third in the league at the time and stood a very good chance of going up...............still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about that game! (They were bottom of the league at the time yet that win sparked a late revival and the Mariners stayed up...............at half time you owuld have got 50-1 at least on them scoring 3 and beating us.)

The support at Southend was one of the best in terms of vocal backing I have had the privelege of being part of whilst following the Reds for nearly 30 years......you really did miss a treat Wuzbrer41 (sorry to rub it in..... and pass on my 'best wishes' to er indoors!)

.....sorry to harp on about the past again.......but the Machin era seemed to be full of sterile football...... Yet he constantly got results and we never ever seemed in danger of going down. What I would give for that scenario again over the next few years.

Aye lad... Them were the days!...........

For my part i was brought up on Peter Price, John Peachey and the great Mick Butler. I reckon i'm 3 years older than you DiscoTyke so our paths may well have crossed. I have to agree that following the Reds through THAT era when Allan Clarke took over and the two promotions, great cup runs, was the best i could have wished for supporting my local team. There was an unbelievable pride - especially when we turned up at several grounds in large numbers. Blimey! I'm going all misty-eyed...... hanging out of football specials; the return journeys always without refreshments etc. Oxford on a Tuesday night with around 1,700 fellow Reds. Enfield, Boro etc.............. Right! She can get ready! I've got a dvd of the old games in my study i'm going to make her sit through it for the Southend debacle!

Wasn't it a great time to grow up and be a kid? The pubs back then, when we got into our teens, had so much charachter too.

Spot on lad.... It's the brandy; makes me get the rose-tinted gigs on. To be honest, it really was the mutt's nuts following barnsley around back in those days.

It was but don't crow about it too much - you will be labelled a sad old sentamentalist!! - punks, mods, new romantics, ska etc etc. Music was so vibrant - and so linked to fashion......gave you a real identity. As regards watching Barnsley I don't think we are actually over doing the reminiscing ie You don't get too many 60 year old plusses on here thinking back misty eyed about the 'good old' days in the 50s and 60s - playing in front of 2-3000 when Barnsley Football Club really was a music hall joke. ...................in fact, by pure luck of birth we surely have been blessed with probably the most sucessfull 30-40 year chuk of BFC history? ie Prem, Wembley, Cardiff, Great Cup Runs, 4 promotions.........how you young uns must envy us!!!

    i wouldnt

mad fookin' mel machin had a decent start at oakwell, but as soon as he got the tiler/agnew money he lost the plot big styleee, all that squad needed were three or four quality additionswith a goalscorer being a priority, but mad mel filled it with ***** and in my opinion he shouldhave beenhung for spending &pound;120,000 on big dopey jonny pearson.</p>

:D :D Well said that man. You have a valid point there old bean. Slurp! (raiseaglass) Quite a varied experience following Barnsley and, Premiership apart (where it was expected i suppose?) we didn't really suffer the hardship of relegation until the other year and, in my opinion, i've only suffered one relegation that hurt! Ain't too bad in over 40 years methinks :D
