Reds fail in bid for strikers Barnsley BARNSLEY will scan the loan market in the coming weeks after failing to land two new strikers before yesterday's deadline for full transfers. The targets were Stoke's Leon Constantine and Swansea's Kevin McLeod. But Stoke were not willing to part with Constantine - except for an unrealistic fee - and Colchester won the race for McLeod. It also followed the Reds' refusal last week to pay Brighton's asking price for Colin Kazim-Richards, whose move to Sheffield United went through yesterday at £150,000. Reds chairman Gordon Shepherd said: "We made an inquiry about Leon Constantine but they (Stoke] didn't want to sell him because he has scored six goals in six games. "We also went for another quick striker from a League One side. He was talking to other people as well, and the other team was prepared to offer a better cash deal." The rivals were Colchester: the U's have paid an undisclosed fee for McLeod, who played against the Reds in the play-off final. New Colchester boss Geraint Williams has also signed Laurie Wilson, son of former Oakwell boss Danny Wilson, who left Sheffield Wednesday two years ago. Shepherd added: "There is a slight disappointment that no-one has come in, but you have to be careful when you buy players." The Reds are reasonably happy with their squad and feel it is important not to stunt the development of young players. Clubs will be able to sign players on loan again soon after the usual "cooling-off" week which follows the closure of the full-transfer window. The next window for full deals opens in January. 01 September 2006
