BARNSLEY Chairman Gordon Shepherd has given his reasons for appointing Simon Davey as the Reds' new first team manager.

Speaking to the press ahead of yesterday's game at Wolves, Mr Shepherd said: "We have been looking to appoint someone early in the New Year and had lots of applications during the four or five weeks. Due to confidentiality agreements we cannot disclose who applied or were interviewed.

"We had looked closely at what Simon (Davey) had achieved over the last three, four or five weeks and could see that he had picked up a better points average than we had before. It was not only the points per game return that convinced us. We looked at the way Simon had tackled the job - he has got the players on side and his professional approach to training and team assessment is very impressive. When we spoke to him he presented us with a dossier on each of our players detailing their strengths and weaknesses, which greatly impressed us.

"His application for the job - without even technically applying - was first class.

"The decision was made on Friday and the Board were unanimous that Simon is the man for the job. He is absolutely our first choice and we only offered the post to him".

Since the board made their decision Played 10 Won 2 Drawn 1 Lost 7 GF = 5 GA = 19 pts 7 Points per game 0.7 ( includes the cup games against southend ) No further comment
