We all (most at least) knew that the defence we had last season was not good enough. We had a good record statistically but that was predominantly (cant spell) down to luck and poor finishing by league one crap strikers. We all still knew that they werent good enough and more importantly we knew that as soon as we got one or two injuries we were fecked.</p> Andy Ritchie and/or the board refused to admit this or simply couldnt see it and we were lucky, we got away with it. Then we released two center backs at the end of the season and went up into a league against better players with just two recognised center backs with first team experience and both of those two started out their barnsley career as midfielders.</p> We now find ourselves with one of the worst defensive records in the league and yet bizarrely they still wont admit it. There is something wrong somewhere.</p>
Absolutely spot on. My thoughts exactly. This should have been sorted out in the summer. Eighteen goals shipped in seven games it's as bad as in the Prem and we all know how that season ended.
the ridiculous thing is who the person is who said that vaughan didnt count Apparently the number 6 who started last season as our captain wasnt actually a member of the first team squad so he didnt need replacing.
RE: the ridiculous thing is who the person is who said that vaughan didnt count you or me could be as effective as him for fecks sake

Spot on there mate. Im not saying we could have got Gary Breen for one minute, but he is the type of player we need at the back. An experienced centre half thats been there and done it. I think we have blown our chances now of getting a player like that due to the fannying around that Ritchie and Shepherd have done in the transfer market regarding defenders. Stevie Wonder could tell Ritchie we need a new defender.</p> Looks like we have a Keegan on our hands in Ritchie. You score 3, we'll try and score 4. Bloody rubbish. </p>
100% agree....in fact I openly stated it last year (ie lucky defence).... but I can't be arsed to go look for it. but trust me anyway
**** me, I found it. I quote 9th december 2005........ http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/bbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=14759&mid=90438#M90438
Thats impressive Both the finding of that post and the fact that a year later you look like you might be being right
I've found one from last season http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/bbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=20439&mid=126473#M126473</p> But the older ones are gone now. My first signature on the BBS when I registered was just the words 'experienced defender required' in fading grey letters above each other.</p>
Also every word of this one is as true today as it was then http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/bbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=24689&mid=152290#M152290</p> </p> Note: it was meant to say defend the lead not league.</p>
no it doesnt It's just even more annoying that we could see it a year ago and despite the problem getting even worse when we released two center halves our manager hasnt spotted it yet.</p>
Our defence is in desperate need of an experienced defender. The strikers we are now playing against every week is a different class to league 1 they will not miss many.NEW DEFENDER NEEDED B4 SATURDAY!
I completely agree that we certainly need new defenders... after tonights result, thats more than evident.</p> But you people also completely slaughtered our attack line that has more than done its job so far this season and that Ritchie believed in, rightly.</p> Can the defence come good too? I don't think so personally, but Ritchie was right about the attackers.</p> I think we need almost an entire new backline - the defensive performances speak for themselves recently and there's no way of defending it. I like Reid, but the rest I'm not entirely confident with. Kay and Hassell are good in spells but can lack concentration, Williams is *****, Heckingbottom is average but probably not good enough for this level.</p> Big decisions need to be made, because we can't keep scoring 1, 2, 3 goals a game and it not being enough.</p>
How is that comment justified? We've come from 2-0 down twice, to get a win and a draw. That suggests that we do know how to adjust when we go behind, doesn't it?
No, cos we continued to use the same tactics/formation etc. what it does prove.. is that from the midfiueld upwards we don't let our heads down.. there were no changes in tactics or anything in either of them 2 games. coming from behind to win, is completely different to losing a game that we were winning. Its called recognising when they change there tactics (ie bringing on GNW and changing to 433) and changing ours to ensure they don't get the upper hand...
