I doubt it was a case of couldn't afford him. Rather, he didn't offer value for money. Even with a wage cut, I would imagine he still wanted a fair bit. He's every right to ask for that, he's a very experienced pro who showed he's still prepared to put a shift in. But after the board meeting I guess it was decided they could get better for cheaper.
