..should be done by either Daley Thompson the best athlete Britain has ever produced or Tanni Grey Thompson, Britain's best Olympian.

Steve Redgrave would dispute both of those statement

Is that the same Redgrave who seemed to be twice the age of his fellow crew and battled crippling illness in order to row?

    Gets my vote.

That's the one. 5 gold medals at 5 different Olympics - surely the best we've ever produced

Tanni Grey Thompson has a total of 16 Olympic medals including 11 (eleven) Gold from 5 different Olympics. To win the Olympic decathlon twice is a tremendous achievement.

    Opening ceremony

Will feature a full stadium size map of London a bit similar to the eastenders map.

I know this because my mate is a pilot .... He really is(!) and took photos of the rehearsals as he was coming into land at London City Airport.

I am not saying it isn't. However, redgrave only became ill in mid part of his career and didn't let it beat him hence why I've gone for him to light it.

Daley for me. Redgrave was a great Olympian, but had an awful lot of help along the way. He was undoubtedly the weakest member of the crew the last couple of times.

Tanni Grey Thompson? You must be having a laugh. The Paralympics is a charity event.

Agree - Redgrave would get my vote too. Hopefully Tanni Grey Thomson will be involved too - maybe one of the last handovers - I think the steps leading up to the flame may be a bit tricky.

Don't be silly, John Terry is already going to be involved with the olympics. He's going to be on the top step of the podium for every single event.

Ha ha. Even though the Olympics were here in 1988, the one thing that Calgarians remember about it is Eddie The Eagle! Not their own athletes, but a goggle-eyed tradesman / part-time (rubbish) ski jumper.

Mine too, no one else comes close. The greatest Olympian we've ever produced, by a country mile - hard to believe they'd even consider asking anyone else to do it, but given that up until a few days ago there was still serious speculation that they might even ask David Beckham to do it, who knows what those corporate wallies at LOCOG might be thinking.......
