Top signing. Capable of getting into any side apart from Chelsea when he's at his best and to get him from a rival after turning down a new contract is a good arrival. The price tags in football have got ridiculous and unfortunately for the sport, he's nowhere near as overpriced as some transfers this summer.
Aye I agree with this. This isn't anywhere near as outrageous as some transfers this summer. I said last summer that every player seemed to move for £35million, this summer its £40million.
Money in the football world is fast becoming worthless. It reminds me of a third world currency such as the Vietnamese dong, where 4 million of it would buy you £200.
If he was German or Spanish (for ex) he probably wouldn't have featured for their national teams. He would probably be 'worth' 10 million.
I also think he's a really good player. Had he been transferred for a million or two fifteen years ago, nobody would have batted an eyelid. That's probably about where we are with £35 million these days, at least for English players. I agree that if he wasn't English, his "value" would be closer to £10-£15m. But to be fair, that's what we'd have paid for Hristov, had we been promoted last year instead of in 1997.
Would be interested to see what our total transfer spending this summer is in comparison to previous years, it must be up there.
I reckon we've possibly spent more than when we were in the Premier League. Excluding Ashley Ward I'm sure we have.
Watched Sky last night. When asked what price Ryan Giggs would have been in his pomp in to-days market, Roy Keane said £2 billion.! Even said Beckham would cost £1 billion. Liverpool spending £40 million on Oxlade-Chamberlain is absolutely barmy. They've also paid £69 million for 22 year old Naby Keita and don't intend taking him into their squad until next Summer. The reason given is to ward off rivals and in the intervening period,he will continue to play for RS Leipzig for the remainder of the season.
I've watched him for years & I still don't know if he's any good, I don't even know what position he's best suited to. To those that rate him, why? What do you see in him? He seems a nice lad & he's English so I hope he does well but he's injury prone, pretty one footed, doesn't score many, doesn't create many & he doesn't strike me as a leader type who can be an asset for the club in that way.
What is scary is the fact he was in the last year of his contract at Arsenal, so has probably gone on the cheap. I too don't see what he will offer Liverpool what they don't already have. Another bang average player to go with the umpteen other ones in the "premier" league.
