Liverpool have been thrust into another race hate row, after a fan was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Oldham player Tom Adeyemi. The incident occurred towards the end of the FA Cup tie, when a fan screamed abuse at the young full-back. Adeyemi, who turned to confront the man, was visibly upset, and seemed to be in tears. Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard moved across to the corner of the ground where the incident occurred, and comforted the 20-year-old. Eyewitnesses saw two fans wearing Luis Suarez t-shirts, and heard one of them clearly shout "You f***ing black b*****d." Police immediately moved in to restrain the two suspects, and later confirmed arrests had been made. A senior Liverpool figure explained afterwards that stewards were immediately on the scene, and he said: "We will do everything in our power to investigate the matter and ensure the appropriate action is taken." The incident could not have come at a worst time for the club, following the controversy that has raged over the Suarez affair, who was banned for eight matches for racist abuse of Manchester United's Patrice Evra. The FA are now sure to investigate, and Liverpool could face sanctions for failing to control their supporters.
Glad I'm now an expat In a nation of 62 million, we are now told that two of them might have said something racist. Broken Britain! Scousers are scum! Or... maybe the reporter should have looked for something more newsworthy.
Re: Glad I'm now an expat Hang on. Young black player receives direct & appalling abuse about the colour of his skin from fans of a club who've not exactly handled the Suarez thing particularly well. Abuse so bad he has to be consoled by players from both sides. What's not newsworthy about that? Let me guess, it's just lads being lads, bit of banter, no harm intended etc etc....? Quite bizarre.
I don't see how a club can be held responsible for the racist views of some fans. If they can identify the fans and prove the allegations the fans should be punished but what can the FA do to Liverpool, it's hardly the fault of the club what their fans shout from the terraces.
I'm sure it wouldn't be newsworthy in Australia Where casual racism is part of the fabric of everyday life. In the UK we find this sort of thing unacceptable, so when it happens it is newsworthy. The report makes no attempt to widen its scope and comment on a broken Britain, it simply highlights that we will not stand for this sort of behaviour.
totally agree... its the stewards that need looking at said this for ages. If any club are advised by the Police/FA/St Johns etc etc or whatever as to what level of security,safety,Policeing/medic cover etc etc ...and then they fully comply to those recommendations ..then how the hell are the club responsible. The clubs place their trust in the agency's concerned to take charge of all of that,so for me a club does not fail...its the agencies that do..and its them they oughta be the ones hit by fines or disciplinaries etc.
I agree with that. I also read a report where police say there's been no arrest but the investigation is on going.
Important to note that I'm not saying it is acceptable behaviour What I am saying is that two people acting in an unacceptable manner is not newsworthy. If it was outside football, and therefore away from sensationalism, it wouldn't go reported. It is not news that the occasional person is a complete t**t. To me the article seems to be more aimed at attacking Liverpool and stirring up a fuss than anything. Just as the Mail's original article targetted Barnsley fans when in fact the truth was 'one person is a moron.' Tell us something we don't know. Not all babies avoid being dropped on their head. Admittedly, I may have missed some of the context, being so far away from it all. And you're right about the Australia thing. I find myself frowning in more conversations these days. It's like being in the 70s or something. Not everyone though, thankfully.
Re: Glad I'm now an expat And Blatter thinks that can be sorted out with a handshake - hmmm!!! Adeyemi hails from Norwich and has the reputation for being a really nice fella - bright and intelligent and going on from sixth form to study a degree, which is how, I think, he came to be with Bradford City and then Oldham. Look what Liverpool's crass handling of the Suarez affair has led to!!! If you give some folks a lead, they will only too quickly follow.
Re: Important to note that I'm not saying it is acceptable behaviour When a Liverpool player has been given an unprecedented 8 game ban for racist comments on the field of play, but has been given unreserved support from the club and its fans, rather than condemnation for his actions, I think it would be remiss of the media not to report that two fans of that club have gone on to racially abuse an opposition player. Maybe if Liverpool football club had accepted responsibility for the actions of one of their players and actually come out and categorically stated such behaviour is unacceptable then the couple of nob heads in the Liverpool crowd wouldn't think that Anfield was an arena where racist views can be aired.
liverpool have to look at themselves mario. kenny D, the players have caused this and it will not go away. its horrid.
Liverpool could face sanctions for failing to control their supporters. The point I made was they can't be held responsible for the views of supporters.
No they haven't and blaming them is just wrong. People are responsible for their own actions; I don't agree that the actions of Kenny D over the Suarez can be blamed for people having racist views.
Given what heppened earlier in the week with other fans generally having a go at us, I'd expect people to just take a step back on this and realise it was 1 moron.
