I would say 4 perm minimum. 2 wingers. 1 striker. 1 LB. Then 2 or 3 quality loans. Players who are a cut above rest of L1. Rather than previous seasons where we've used loans just to have bodies in squad.
never mind about incomings... really listen to that.. I can only say I am totally impressed with Lee... we will do well this term I feel. Promotion or not I really get a good vibe from this fella for long term.
Good point. He did say in a previous interview that he wasn't bothered about bringing loans in a few weeks into the season as long as his permanent targets were secured.
The way LJ talked about Mawson... I wouldn't be too surprised to see him in a holding mid-field role, maybe not straight away, but in his development..
Sounds to me like he thinks the defence is now sorted. Lewin Nyatanga - age 26 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: 271 + 19 as sub Marc Roberts - age 24 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: zero George Williams - age 22 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: 1 + 3 as sub Alfie Mawson - age 21 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: zero Mason Holgate - age 18 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: 18 + 2 as sub George Smith - age 18 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: 16 + 2 as sub Jack Cowgill - age 18 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: 1 + 1 as sub James Bree - age 17 - Appearances at League 1 level or above: 6 + 6 as sub Nyatanga certainly has plenty of experience, but the rest of the defence must be the youngest and least experienced in the entire football league. 42 starts at this level between all 7 of them. Roberts has never played a football league game in his career. Williams and Cowgill have started 1 game each. 4 teenagers out of the 8. 7 of them under 25. Very brave if we're going with that.
I don't think we need a left back, three strikers, one of the Winnall type, and two big lads, two wingers, then 3/4 long term loans
Brave or naive; time will tell. I'd be happier if we brought in another defender with experience similar to Nyatanga.
Means jack **** though our stand out players last season winnall, hourahine, scowern, holgate and davis had played very few if any games at league one or above before last season.
Winnall, Hourihane and Scowen had 270 starts between them in league 2. They'd no experience at this level, but they were stand out performers in the league below with plenty of games under their belt. They were making a step up, but they weren't starting from scratch. Mawson falls in to this category too after his season on loan to Wycombe where he performed very well. But as for the rest of them... Marc Roberts has never played a single game in professional football. George Williams and Jack Cowgill have just one start apiece in the football league. James Bree has six, while both Holgate and Smith have under 20. It's not the case of them having to make the step up like Hourihane et al, they have virtually no experience at all of the professional game. There's loads of potential within those players, but to expect them to deliver week in, week out for an entire season at this stage of their careers is a massive ask. Particularly as we only have Nyatanga to help guide them. We'll not be introducing young players in to an experienced back four, at least three quarters of the defence will be inexperienced. After half a dozen starts last season, Wilson told the board he was resting James Bree to give him time to recuperate and prevent injury. Unfortunately, the academy continued to play him and he was injured - stress fracture, out for six months. Four of eight defenders are still teenagers and if we play them every week, the same could happen to them. As Williams and Roberts have no experience of the professional game, no one knows if they're going to be good enough, so the kids may have to play. In the case of George Smith, we haven't got an alternative left back. If you're good enough, you're old enough is often banded about in regards to young talent, but that doesn't take in to account how susceptible these players are to injury when playing so many games. Luke Potter made his debut for Barnsley at 18. He played 21 games for the first team, plus games for the academy and numerous games out on loan at various clubs. He played his last game for Barnsley at 21 after which he retired - knackered.
Smith, Holgate and Bree are inexperienced but have proved they are more than good enough. Whether their bodies will be up to a full season yet is another matter mind, but a 28yo can also have injury problems.
They've had young uns doing yogurt for last couple of years, to help them with muscle growth hoping to prevent mussel injuries, which is the most common injury with young players, just how a fruit corners going to do that I have no idea,
It does seem strange...we keep hearing resale value etc. Wonder if that's a football decision or a Board strategy?
