For those who remember probably the best 'white' blues artist. Long John Baldry passed away Thursday (21st July) in Vancouver.
Saw him when he visited the Club Ba Ba. Was at same table in the casino and ended up winning when he threw the dice. Saved them chips for weeks - til skint that is.
Elton John was one of them. Apparently his early bands read like a whos who of 60's and 70's pop stars.
Remember him very well. Strangely, it wasn't until he moved away from his bluesy style that he achieved his greatest success. Funnily enough, the song I associate him with most is "Mexico" which was used to publicise TV coverage of the '68 Olympics. I have his "best of" CD, with Chris Farlowe's CD in the same package. Think i'll have a Baldry / Farlowe evening with a bottle of wine, being as all telly offerings are total chuff this evening. R.I.P.
It was Elton yes. Interestingly, he aso played piano on He anit heavy, he's my brother, and I can't tell the bottom from the top - by the Hollies.
