Got a weekend booked in Madrid at the end of September. Any recommendations / must see /general observations or experiences? TIA
Went to Madrid earlier this year with the intention of watching Real Madrid but the game was moved to the following week so we went to athletico game Fantastic atmosphere and well worth the visit Cost less than £20 Pubs around the city centre are expensive but no different to any other city centre (capital) I went on a stag do so we didn't do much else than drink and went to football Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Many thanks for that. Going with my wife and other couples so it isn`t really a football orientated visit. Whether we can fit in a stadium tour or not we`ll have to see.
Goya's Black period in the Prado if you're into art. Plaza Mayor for a coffee or a beer (expensive but quite reasonable for a lunch - menu del dia - as long as you sit inside) Puerto del Sol for shops etc - geographic centre of the Iberian peninsula which is why Madrid was established as the capital There's a few rooftop bars in the city centre with wonderful views Salamanca - the socialist part of town, always something going on in the streets Vicente Calderon - if Atleti are at home, proper team with proper supporters not like the other lot - if there's no game then lunch in the ground is decent value and the tour is free.
Bernabeo tour is 15 euros each, not guided, you just follow the signs. Calderon tour is free and guided (set times).
Botin's restaurant. Hemingway used to go there. Loads of atmosphere and roast suckling pig. Yum. It's probably going to be busy though.
Went season before last to see the Madrid derby at the Calderon (2-2 draw). Fantastic occasion, stadium was rammed but only a few fans from across the city.
My son got them from the Atleti official web site, I think they were 75 euros and had to be bought well in advance. We went to another game the season before against Granada and we bought the tickets from a machine in the street, 25 euros each. The machines are all over the city and you can buy tickets for all sorts of things. If its not a big game, you'd get tickets on the day.
Beautiful place. Longing to go back. Visit the Benabau, even them that don't like football will appreciate the tour. Loads of pl;aces to eat and drink, you can't go wrong. To watch out for - Homeless and prostitutes it you go down the wrong street. The prostitutes weren't shy, even though I was with r lass.
Worked there for 2 years and it's my favorite city, plenty to do and see but best start is for you to buy the 2 day open top bus tour doing both routes and jumping on/off as you please. It costs around 20euros each but you get the map and audio commentary of the city and all the places mentioned in the replies above are on the routes ......Bernabeu, Vincente Calderon for games or tours, Plaza Major, Salamanca, the Palace etc etc. My favorite area for coffee, beers, dining / relaxing is the less popular Plaza Santa Ana.
Where did you live? My sister went to Madrid in 1979 and only left when she retired in 2010. She now lives in Lanjaron (near Granada). She lived for a while just off Principe de Vergara and then she bought a flat just opposite Prosperidad Metro station. I've been there loads of times over the years, it's a lovely city but feels more like a small town.
I stayed on the outskirts of Madrid as the office was in Alcobendas. I didn't actually live there as work put me in a top hotel and I pretty much flew out early every Monday morning and back late Friday. That said I probably lived the city more than most as we were out every night (I never spent more than 5 hours a day in the hotel!!) I was out there with William Hill (traded as Victoria Apuestas over there) and one of the many tasks was the creation of a betting shop .... Directly opposite the Bernabeu in a bingo hall called 'Canoe'. Far better than any betting shops we have in the UK due to our restrictions but in Canoe you can place a bet, stay for the day watching sport on 90foot video walls and get beer & quality food!
Many thanks for all the suggestions - sounds like it will be my own fault if we don't have a great time!
