It is wrong, wrong, wrong and I can honestly see the day when players are flitting between international teams in the way they do it with their clubs. I deplore it in the same way I deplore young South African cricketers having the attitude "doesn't matter if I don't make it with the Boks, I can always go play for England". The Rep of Ireland started it all years ago when anyone could play for them as long as they could prove they used Kerrygold on their toast.

    Wrong.

Sorry it's nothing like the cricketers.

All but one of the England players who were born in SA have English parent. Really don't know why people use that argument about it at all.

Back to Football and costa. I think it's wrong because he's played for Brazil already. Yes it's was only a friendly but he played for them.

It goes back further than the Irish. Alfredo Di Stefano was a capped international player for three different countries - Argentina (where he was born), Colombia and Spain (he got citizenship while playing for Real)....

Hemsie is right on the cricketer issue. Many ex-pats have children abroad due to work or circumstance. My niece was born in Germany due to my brother serving in the British Army over there at the time. Should she and those like her not qualify to represent England at sport?

Pietersen's mother is English. He has every right to play for England.

Is anyone bothered about Wiseman potentially playing for Gibraltar?

    Just wondering.

They should make it simple, you play for the country YOU were born in. None of this crap about your Grandparents once holidaying in Skegness, despite the fact you were born in Mongolia.

I'd include where parents are from as well, otherwise what about someone born early whilst parents on holiday or people in forces stationed abroad?

Re: Looks like Diego Costas going to play for Spain, anyone got any thoughts on the m

There should be a criteria for choices drawn up - something like (off the top of my head, there may be more)

The country you were born in
The country either of your parents was born in
A country you have resided in continuously for at least the past 5 years

When a player signs his first pro contract he has to make an irrevocable choice who he wishes to represent. None of this "well I'm Brazilian but not good enough so I may as well play for Spain" malarkey.

Re: Looks like Diego Costas going to play for Spain, anyone got any thoughts on the m

I think its a case of where do you draw the line. If you're born abroad because your Dad (or Mum) is in the Army and based there for three years then you should have the right to represent England but if you're born abroad because your parents have emigrated there and are permanent residents then I think the argument takes on another dimension.

Re: Looks like Diego Costas going to play for Spain, anyone got any thoughts on the m

It should be made simple. You can play for the national side of a country if...
    1. You were born there.
    2. You're parents were residing there when they had you abroad, but returned obviously.
    3. You moved from elsewhere whilst still a child and now have citizenship in that country.

Re Diego Costa, well without being melo-dramatic it kind of ruins it for me. If Spain knock us or whoever out and he plays a staring role... it wont feel right. HE'S BRAZILIAN. Not the first though, remember Marcos Senna? He was vital to the beginning of this Spanish super football back in 2008. He's Brazilian through and through but anchored the midfield to allow Xavi and Iniesta to go and spearhead a new dawn.
