Looks Like I'm In A Minority Of One

But I cannot get enthusiastic about signing a player from a club who finished 9th in the second tier in Scotland. A level that is probably similar to the Conference North or Unibond in this country. Looking at the size of the club that's where they would probably be if they played in this country.

I've seen numerous people saying they are pleased or this is a good signing. Based on what exactly? Yes he has a good strike record but no one has seen him play or had heard anything about him before this week. People have nothing to base their views on. The only good thing I can see in him at the moment is that he is cheap. Just like this club.

Time will tell if I am wrong and contrary to what people may believe, I sincerely hope I am, I just can't see it.

Based on the potential he has shown so far he looks like he COULD be a good signing. Best to give the lad a chance though rather than immediately assume he's crap. You'll end up with ulcers.

 

I think people will know where you are coming from, but the way I see it (with my positive head on) :

Kid scores 20odd in 30odd in Scotland.
Odds on kid will move.
He chooses Barnsley.

That'll do for me.

I'm basing my views on the level of football he has come from. All we can go on really.

I've given my verdict in my original post.

 

But it's still nothing to base an opinion on.

 

If we'd signed 10 players under 24 who had spent 5 years at Liverpool or Chelsea - then spent a season in the Conference and banged in 30 goals / kept clean sheets / had great pass completed stats / had numerous assists - on a one years deal I'd be over the moon.

Because whether they all turn out to be great or not we're recruiting players that look right.

Whether they turn out right or not is another issue. But start out with 10 you end up with 3 starters, 2 squad players and you're able to shuffle off the rest after a season.

So on Balance assuming he's not paid the earth - it pleases me at the moment that the club appear to be doing the right thing.

Then maybe Oakwell is not the place for you.

Perhaps give the Etihad or Stamford Bridge a visit instead

 

Not bothered where he`s come from or what he`s done but the time to get enthusiastic or not is after the lad has hed a run of games to see what he can do for us.

 

By that logic, never sign anyone from a lower level than where you're at.

So if he'd scored 60 goals last season, you'd still say the quality is crap, therefore he can't be much good?

I had a laugh on here a week or so ago at the moaners who were complaining that we hadn't signed anybody, unlike our League One rivals (that is League One, by the way, where we'll be playing Fleetwood and Crawley, not Real Madrid or even Rotherham United!) and I suggested that if we signed the type of player that the others had signed the moaners would still moan, because the players would apparently not be good enough. Well congratulations, you've proved me right!

You may feel that Cowdenbeath players are below us and on a level with Conference players, but I respectfully point out to you that a) we're skint, b) we're in League One, not the Championship any more, c) you seem to be basing this purely on the low attendance figures in the lower Scottish leagues, d) you're talking bolox anyway. Who knows which players will excel at which clubs. England have a player in their World Cup squad who a few years ago was a lower league journeyman in his mid-20s. I saw him play for Bristol Rovers against Hartlepool the day before we won at Plymouth to stay up a few years ago and concluded that he was too slow to make it any higher. Just goes to show doesn't it. Hartlepool had an ex-Manchester United player in their attack of about the same age. Daniel Nardiello hasn't just moved to Liverpool for £4m though.

We've signed plenty of players from lower league clubs and non-league clubs over the years who have done well at Oakwell. And we've had more than our fair share of players from Premiership clubs who have turned out to be donkeys. We need to bring in players with their playing years ahead of them, rather than behind them, players who don't cost us big transfer fees, players who aren't going to have big wage demands, players who are on an upward turn in their careers, players who we can hopefully develop and make a profit on, players who want to play for Barnsley, and this lad seems to tick all those boxes. He may well turn out to be rubbish, but it's a low cost gamble, which is all we can afford to take. If we all start giving off the kind of bad vibes that you give off though we could guarantee he'd fail, along with the rest of the team. Fortunately we're not all like you.

My recommendation to you would be to take the summer off. Delete your link to the BBS and the BBC football page, cos it only seems to be making you more miserable. Enjoy the summer, watch a bit of cricket, as Yorkshire are doing well. Then come August get yourself down to Oakwell with no pre-conceived ideas and try to support the team and enjoy the game. Honestly, you'd feel better for it, because you're going to make yourself unwell getting yourself all in a tiz that the players we're signing are not good enough. I reckon we'll be bringing several more in from the same level, so it's only going to make you more miserable. And what's more, if you do take the summer off you'll find that the rest of us will be a little happier too.
