The purpose of this pain is to cleanse the individual from the temporal consequences of her or his sins while on earth. Eventually, the person will be eligible to be transferred to Heaven. yeah, someone interviewed them, one of the questions where 'are they all in purgatory' Producers laughed and said definatly not. There are all definatly alive and they wouldnt want to end the show in such a boring way anyway. Good guess.
