That wasn't the game it reminded me of. In the Liverpool game we played fantastic football, we were the better team, but we were undone by an incompetent referee. Despite the two sendings off, I don't think even the most biased Barnsley fan could blame the referee for yesterdays result. The game I was reminded of was the Leicester home game from the 1981/82 season. We were chasing promotion rather than fighting off relegation, but similar to this season we'd just gone on a fantastic run of 7 wins and three draws from the previous 11 games where the lads had put in a monumental effort. In the Leicester game it all fell apart. Just like yesterday our players looked jaded, just like yesterday the opposition looked much fresher and more up for the fight and just like yesterday we had two players sent off. We lost the game 2-0 and it ended our promotion dreams. However, the very next game was a home match too. We were up against QPR who were still very much in the promotion running. They'd won their last four games and in the previous two they'd beaten Bolton 7-1 and Newcastle 4-0 at St James' Park. They were also through to the FA Cup final where they'd eventually lose in a replay to Tottenham. They were a proper team. We were down and out, confidence shattered, promotion aspirations distinguished, as low as we could be. We won the game 3-0 and put in a performance that you could argue was our best of the season, in a season that had dozens of sensational performances. So, you never know. Had QPR beaten us that day they would have been promoted. They finished 5th. We finished 6th, but had we beaten Norwich in the home game in February where we lost 1-0 it would have been us that had been promoted at their expense. It was as barmy up at the top of the division in 81/82 as it is down the bottom in 12/13. Erm, so there you go, do carry on.
Good post Jay. I think a lot of people are linking I yesterday to the Liverpool game s because of the red cards and the fact it is quite close to the end of the season. At the end of the day it is 3 points lost and we've got 12 to play for.
Actually, we're 1 point away from survival, with 12 points to play for. This is not over, it's just the cards and injuries that have really hit us
