    from Chronicle:

Keith Hill has revealed that Luke Steele is the highest-paid player at Barnsley and has suggested that may be a factor in whether the goalkeeper signs a new contract.

Last year’s player of the season Steele is returning to full fitness after a groin injury sidelined him in April.

Hill said: “Luke Steele is the highest-paid player at the football club so we will have to look at that before we negotiate with him. But he is obviously someone we would love to keep and we will speak to him soon like we will with all the out-of-contract players.

“Luke has been excellent in training in terms of shot-stopping but he cannot kick properly yet. Ben Alnwick has been superb since he returned from suspension so there is no panic.”

Steele has been on the bench for Barnsley’s last two games and played 90 minutes for the development squad at Wigan on Monday

If he wasnt injured then Steele would have left in August. He wont sign a new contract because he saw what was offered to ButterCup to entice him to stay, he feels he is worthy of the same.

Not being able to afford his wages is different to being pushed out.

Pushed out? Where do you get that from?

No reason to worry at present, as Alnwick has performed admirably, IMO. Apart from headbutting people. Unless it's Jason Shackell. Or thereev (chico).

    yet another vaz te situation.

why don't we offer out contracts out in the summer so negotiations and thinking can be made up until the new year before players can speak to other clubs?

What if the player doesn't want to discuss one in the summer? As was the case with Steele.

    Exactly.

If he hadn't have been injured we could've looked to sell in Summer.

He might not get a sniff anyway, Alnwick's not done anything wrong.
