For me I will say a huge thankyou for your time with Barnsley FC. That day at Anfield was ... well just magical, many just remember Howards last minute goal... but if not for you we would have had a cricket score result against us... and then we took Chelski at the 'Well too. You saved us also in the leagues on numerous occasions from embarrassments and kept us up there too. I hope you have a great time in Greece( its a tremendous country with fantastic people) Good luck Luke , and if you ever return to the English leagues I for one would be thrilled if you came back to Barnsley.... now go smash a few plates fella..... btw Cockinelli wine is awesome... used to drink that when posted to Cyprus... I believe the Greeks have it too.... but it is ROCKET FUEL... YAAAAAAAHHHHH.. all the best Fella and THANKS

The first player I've been truly upset about leaving us in years. Yes Bobby going was sad but time catches up with us all. Others such as Butterfield, Stones, Vaz Te and Hamill left with a feeling of inevitability chasing the dream. Luke stood apart a proper old school footballer in love with the game. Loyal. Talented. An adopted son. A throwback to better days when players wanted to play as many games as possible. Someone that we could all identify with. I feel pretty devastated really.

The last few years have offered little in the way of joy for Barnsley fans but some of Lukes's performances have lifted the gloom. From his debut match when he played an absolute blinder through to games like Blackburn at home last season where he prevented a cricket Score in the first half.

I feel we currently have no players that clubs like ours need. None that truly link community and club. No one to provide continuity. It's a sad day. No player is bigger than the club but some shine out as being admirable and they are few and far between.

Goodbye like a rare jewel in a sea of *****.

By his statement, he does read this board. So - thanks, Luke, for playing such a key part in some of the best memories of the last few years and for having the guts in the first place (which Thomas Sorensen allegedly didn't) to sign for us for the Liverpool game and then show all those guts in that performance. Lots of others since too - Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest clean sheets away season before last stick in the memory. Great professional and leader by example.

Hope the Greek lessons are going well. Enjoy the moussaka, fella!

great words and totally agree but we have to move on and hope things will fall in place soon, 4 weeksd to go and no doubt danny is working hard to solve the problems, steely leaving frees up some more money, hate losing players like him but we have to realise and some bfc supporters do have to realise the real world, it's league 1 we dont have the finances we had in the championship we might feature once maybe twice on sky who knows but now is the time our club needs us, REAL WORLD , just hope mansford comes out and tells us the REAL situation at oakwell not the smoke screen we have had anyway GOOD LUCK LUKE STEELE, Pana thi What ever they are ill follow you in the champions league

We are down to about 7 players who've ever played a league game though so it doesn't look promising. Since relegation haven't we got rid of nearly 20 players. We sort of need to play with a goalkeeper unless we are going to go with 'goalie when'. We had already 'saved' the money on the contracts we offered the 4 midfielders.

I'm not a panic merchant or overly critical of everything. But as it stands today. I think another relegation struggle seems quite likely. Then the finances will get even worse and the cycle continues. Other teams such as Donny and Yeovil with smaller budgets seem to have managed the transition much more effectively without asset stripping the team.

Such a shame to see Luke go. With loyalty being at an all time low in the game, many players having very questionable sportsmanship, and money being thrown around like confetti, Luke Steele has displayed nothing other than true professionalism in the 6 years he's spent at the club. His first memory will probably be the lasting one, and his performance that day is still the best of any debutant I have seen or are ever likely to see.

What strikes me though is the fact that last season, when he looked certain to leave, amidst the alleged slashing of contract terms, he stayed on. A big song and dance was made over the contract Hassell was given, I wonder if Steele took a pay cut too, which may be a motivator in him leaving now. I'm not sure how good a standard the Greek league is, however he has earned his chance to have a crack at Europe, and I wish him all the best and hope that we see him lining up against some of Europe's top players in just a couple of months time.

I dont think any fan at the liverpool game will forget the way he played ever,it will stick with me for the rest of my days.

As for luke going, well, im not his biggest fan infact I was one of his critics. I think he is overrated a hell of a lot by a few fans!

Anyway good luck in greece luke lad, hope it works out for you.

A 40% cut. Just so some ignorant fecking knobheads on here and at Oakwell could slag him off.
He says it does not bother him, but I know it does and I hope that this season we have a bloody good keeper because they will ready to have a dig at every bad kick, every goal and everytime he fails to catch the ball, because they have all played the game at high level !!
