    Do you have a link to the actual article? I’ve googled and looked on the Beeb but couldn’t find it.

    Devil is in the detail here. Digital ID and ID Cards shouldn’t be confused.

    I'm all for ID cards if they replace Passports etc. It would be good if one size fit all.

    I'm not pro ID cards by any means but any time someone gets outraged by the concept I can't help but think: "What are you hiding?"

    It's not about that. It's about handing over unreasonable powers to the state that could be used inapproriately should the wrong people come to power. They effectively then have the power to make you a non-person if you say something dissenting in a social credit scoring stylee. Do i think Labour will do that, no, is it possible that someone will, yes absolutely. I've seen enough episodes of Black Mirror :)

    Digital ID is critical to protecting people from ID theft and other cyber risks. Should've been in place years ago. It:s not, however, even remotely the same as mandatory ID cards

    I wouldn’t agree that we know enough to say they’ve lied about anything.

    The digital bill just rolled out mentions being able to use digital means to prove age and I.D - for convenience’ sake as much as anything - but it doesn’t imply that they will be compulsory and/or forced upon everyone

    Do they not currently have the power to make you a "non-person"?

    They already hold the digital records for your primary forms if ID, national insurance, tax, and voting rights. They could all be deleted in the event that a nefarious group were in charge. How does provision of a digital identity change anything like that?

    Edit: in fact it should better protect you from that. Especially if they use something like Blockchain. Once you take ownership, noone else can control that data

    Agreed mate, if I recall correctly, our mate @Stahlrost and his wife travelled to and from Germany for years using just her ID card. Now she has to use her passport.

    Never understood the push back against even mandatory ID cards, especially if they could replace passports as well.

    Providing clear rules about who can ask to see ID, ie the police etc are in place. If you aren't doing owt wrong what's the worry?

    Flaky journalism for me that, from the Beeb. Bordering on scaremongering. Digital identity services could mean many things. It's a big leap to assume that means the government are going to issue ID cards and harvest all our data for illicit purposes. If they use decentralised ID for example, they wouldn't even have ownership of it. That said, it's pretty naive of people to think their data isn't already being used in a massive way. Google, Amazon, Meta, Twitter, Apple etc etc.

    Digital information and Smart data bill: This would change data-sharing standards and introduce a proper system for digital verification services.
