Is there a more inappropriate sign in the whole of England than the sign for junction 39 on the M1 southbound? It's signposted Denby Dale. Denby Dale is 8 miles away. To get there you have to travel through Calder Grove, bisect West Bretton and Midgley and drive through Clayton West and Scisset, all villages (with the exception of Midgley) equally as big as Denby Dale. You actually get off the motorway in Durkar. Criggleston is less than half a mile away. Wakefield City centre is only 2.5 miles away (closer than junction 41 which is signposted Wakefield)! The signpost on the northbound carriage way for junction 39 actually says Wakefield. Sandal and New Miller Dam are just a few miles away, one with a nice castle the other with a nice lake. So what has Denby Dale done to deserve this signpost ahead of all these other places? I can only surmise that it's the size of their pie. 'Cos that's what we do oop north, we signpost places with big pies.
Should read: Barnsley North. It's an used advert for the town and for trade. All that traffic bombing up and down the M1, past the noticeable from the motorway industrial units at Darton, some of which are empty and we point em to Denby Dale.
Junction 38 should be Barnsley North. That's signposted Huddersfield, which is over 11 miles away. Barnsley is just over 5.
