I drove up Dodworth road to the roundabout at 6:30, it was very busy at that time (I go north on the M1 so ok for me once on there). I was just thinking it was particularly busy for that time when they announced on Radio 5 that the M1 was closed. All southbound traffic was being brought off at Dodworth, they could do with electronic diversion signs for such instances as half the vehicles I passed, people were checking road maps

So a body on a layby means both carriageways have to be shut! FFS!

Friends of mine stuck on M1 on way to East Midlands Airport. Flight well missed, they are not too happy. I wonder how many others travelling to EMA have missed their flights, for what can only be described as incompetance on behalf of the authorities. The bloke's dead. Is it of any importance whether one vehicle or twenty-seven ran over him. He was either walking where he shouldn't, or he jumped off the bridge.

    RE: Yes

So he's fallen (whether pushed or jumped) from the bridge - close the carriageway he is on and set up a contraflow with 2 lanes each way on the opposite carriageway. May have required motorway being closed for a hour while they set it up.

Any idea if it's open yet - just wondering whether to avoid the motorway completely on the way home.

Doesnt help that both the A1 and M18 have been shut also due to major accidents.

It was supposed to be opening back up at midday.

The police don't know whether he was pushed or jumped which is why it is taking so long. It took me 2 hours this morning to get from sunny Athersley to junction 36 (Birdwell)! One of the rare occasions I wish that my car was an automatic!

Van driver parked up near that bridge earlier

He says the bloke is splatted all over the motorway, blood and bits of him everywhere. That's probably why they've shut both sides, sounds pretty nasty. I'm glad i'm not collecting the bits up.

Which bridge is it ? .....

.... if its the big arch bridge just south of J37 then that's a long way to fall (if they did indeed fall from it) - we used to run across that bridge on school cross-country's.

They've only just built a new fottbridge at Tankersly. Wonder if it's that one? The body was spotted at 4am apparently, and was hit by a few cars. I can understand why they take their time with forensics, but 6 hours!!!

Anyone know the current traffic situation please?

I guess a few of us have to travel back into Barnsley this evening.

I would normally get on the motorway at Haigh and get back off at Dodworth. Is there a lot of diverted traffic through Darton?

    TIA
    Stephen

believe the M1 is open now, BUT restricted to two lanes in parts around the incident.
