Delays as major section of 'one of Britain's busiest motorways' shuts

One of the busiest sections of motorway in the UK will be closed for a large part of this weekend so vital bridge-demolishing work can be carried out.

The closure affects the M1 between junctions 26 and 27 is expected to result in long delays in the area.

This section will be shut from 10pm on Saturday until 6pm on Sunday.

Work involved the demolition of the junction 26 overbridge and is part of the M1 widening scheme.

This is the seventh and final bridge demolition required so that the Highways Agency can continue to widen the M1 to four lanes in each direction.

There will be fully signed diversion routes in place.

However road users are advised to seek alternative routes or leave extra time for their journeys as long delays are expected.

Work to implement and remove traffic management measures is likely to affect M1 traffic one hour before and one hour after the full closure.

Highways Agency project manager Geoff Bethel said: "We want drivers to be fully aware that this is a major task so that they can make alternative arrangements while the motorway is closed.

"Demolishing this concrete structure is a huge undertaking and, for safety reasons, we have to close the motorway while work takes place.

"This is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Britain, carrying over 160,000 vehicles per day.

"This work is an essential part of the major road-widening scheme to improve safety and journey times on the M1."

    Trouble is that ....

even though an April 1st gag, you can believe it may still happen!!! We already have a tube strike starting at 6.30pm; will you trust Network Rail to have clear routes north or south on a Sunday?; you can imagine some hold-up for significant roadworks on at least one motorway - I think 1st April has come to be an all-year-round event for many travellers.
