I've just put 2 tea bags into a compost bin at work, can someone please tell me exactly how many penguins or polar bears I have saved and more importantly when they'll thank me?

No you are mixing up two issues

Global warming which is allegedly affecting polarbears and pengins (though actually numbers of bears have increased recently - just 2 areas off Canada where they have fallen).
Global warming is caused by transporting tea leaves from India and Sri lanka on nasty Aeroplanes or nice ships both generating lots of nasty COz
Its also caused by coal or gas fired power stations which generate energy for you to boil your kettle so you have already done the damage by having the cuppa in the first place.

You are trying to offset that by reducing the need to use landfil to comply with an EU directive dreamt up by Holland and Belgium who had run out of space. wasnt a problem in the UK until the one size fits all directive was issued from Brussels

so composting your t bags actually saves precisely 0 pengiuns and 0 polar bears - hope thats clear

also, who's that bird who says "ooh it's great being a super model, but it's better being a role model for my son, so I wash our clothes at 30 degrees". Anyway, I don't wash my clothes at all and nobody thanks me, in fact people are quite blatantly rude about it.
