A man has shot himself dead on a motorway after a chase involving armed officers.Officers fired a baton round at the man, who had a firearm, after stopping a car on the M1 near Nottingham.The man then turned the firearm on himself.</p> A police spokeswoman said officers administered first aid at the scene, between junction 27, at Annesley, and junction 26, at Nuthall.</p> However, the man died en-route to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.</p> Officers stopped the car after pursuing it <table cellspacing="2" cellpadding="0" align="right" border="0"><tbody><tr><td align="center"></td></tr></tbody></table>southbound on the M1 after the driver left an address in Doncaster and drove off at speed.</p> Police were making inquiries at the address shortly after midnight, after receiving information from another force.</p> A police spokeswoman said: "As a result of information received from another force, South Yorkshire officers made enquires at an address in Thorne, Doncaster.</p> "Shortly after midnight a man left the address and drove off at speed.</p> "Police officers pursued the vehicle south-bound on the M1 bringing it to a halt between junctions 27 and 26.</p> "The man was in possession of a firearm. Officers fired a baton round at the man, who then turned the firearm at himself.</p> "Police officers immediately administered first aid but the man was pronounced dead en route to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham."</p> The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 27 and 26, causing traffic chaos during the morning rush hour.</p> The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.</p>
