which club hasnt bought premiership success? man utd, arsenal, chelsea, blackburn all spent money man city have followed that tradition on. liverpool, spurs and newcastle have all spent bundles of cash just to compete at the top. id love to see the money men behind those clubs pull the plug and watch them go bust!!!

I don't understand why people say Man Utd have bought the title, they're spending about as much as they're making on merchandise. If we had a billion fans in the far east, would you like us to spend a fraction of that on players, or have us keep buying from leagues 1 and 2. City are buying players, purely funded by their owners. It's ridiculous. Today is a dark day for football.

Well put Archey, there is a massive difference and I am no apologist of Manure. What City are doing is obscene.

There is absolutely NO difference in City buying players and Utd buying Rio for £30 million 10 years ago, or Rooney for £30 million ish, just because they could.

Not really its just whats always gone on for years the clubs like Man Utd have abused their superior spending power (Blackburn did it too) Fergusson has only just started moaning about it because he's no longer the one with the most money to spend.Personally I don't like it and I also think its obscene but please don't pretend its new because its not its just that the proprtionate value of money has changed.

What an absolutely ridiculous and frankly embarassing comment.

Man Utd have succeeded over the past 25 years by having a fantastic manager who has brought a "sleeping lion" club to major COMMERCIAL success - NOT funded by sugar daddies. They have been able to spend a lot of players on the money they have from SELF-GENERATED funds. It's exactly the way I would like Barnsley to do it given half the chance. Furthermore, in recent seasons Man Utd have been funding their owners to the tune of 200k a year (not the other way round). They should be commended for what they've achieved this season when they were -500k on the spending front compared to the eventual winners (merely on goal difference).

    Giggs
    Beckham
    Scholes
    G neville
    P Neville
    Butt
    O'Shea
    Brown
    Sharpe
    Evens
    Cleverely
    welbeck

Sure there will be some I have missed

Cost a fecking fortune that lot - They should be disgusted with themselves for bringing so many young British players into the premier League

Even ronaldo was only purchased for 12 million and was an unknown

Yes United have bought players but not an whole team of superstars.

Yes, that's why they're one of the most debt ridden clubs in world football...

Re: oh and before you all start on their youth policy too...

So you have the Neville brothers, Scholes, Giggs, Brown and Welbeck, (off the top of my head) - how many "local lads" have played for Barnsley in the last 5-10 years? Then take a look at Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea - it's the same everywhere you look, pretty much. That's English football for you - "cheap" foreign players / increased mobility have changed the way clubs recruit players forever. Sorry, but you've lost your argument there, IMO.

I cant believe I am jumping in to a thread to defend Man U as I cant stand them but there is some real rubbish in this

The reason they are one of the most debt ridden clubs is nothing to do with the way they buy players and all to do with the way they were bought by the Glazers who basically mortgaged the club to buy it - it was debt free up to them taking it over and they have hardly pumped millions in to buy players - if anything the reverse. Some clubs Man Untited and Liverpool spring to mind have not benefitted at all by being taken over by American owners who were hoping to make money from them.

Man City and Chelsea are different - this is where a super rich owner has bought a team as a hobby to play around with his small change and go and buy trophies. what will be funny is when they get bored with them and they go the way of Rangers Portsmouth and Blackburn.

Thats not likely to happen to Man U

Re: OM feckin GOD just how naive are you Archey

Looking back over the last 20 years why do you think they have brought through so many youngsters?

What kid will choose Barnsley when Man Utd are sniffing around? As a 13 year old who would you rather say you played for Man Utd or Barnsley? Yes they have been successful and have generated most of the money they spend, but Barnsley could do that if they had 1billion armchair fans in Asia. Like someone posted last night think it was madmark, there is no difference between what City are doing and what United have done in the past with Rio, Veron, Van Nistlerooy, Rooney, & Yorke.

The key difference is where United got their money from. Sustained success and development, focussed on their academy in the early 90's.

They're always going to sign the best players but they've not done it over night because a bloke from the Far East who's been to the ground twice is signing the cheques. United are succesful despite the Glazers, not because of them.

But it's sustainable, I reckon they're not getting into any more debt. Man City are racking it up at an exceptional rate. I could be wrong like, but i'd be suprised if not. There isn't one major company in the world which doesn't have debt.
