Best bit of business at Oakwell for years and years for me so long as that cash goes to improve the team and not disappear like usual. As i said to my everton supporting mate today, they had by far the better of the stones deal and i reckon we've had the better of the holgate deal, keeping both clubs vast disparity of football league position in mind. Btw, he thinks it was 1 million rising to 2 in instalments with a sell on fee.
I think it's generally accepted he isn't Stones level. Not many are. Is that a stick to beat him with? Not saying you are here btw, I can see the point you're trying to make. But it keeps getting said he's not as good as if it's something he should be embarrassed about.
He's nowhere near John Stones and never will be but that's not me saying he's a ***** player, I believe he will probably play for a high end championship club or low end PL club. I really do want him to make it to the big time, mainly so a big 4 club snap him up and we end up quids in.
No, the thread is what my perception of him as a footballer is when compared to stonesy. I'm really quite surprised by this move and wish the lad well but i feel its like comparing apples and oranges really. Mason's a decent prospect but i think we've done extremely well with this deal whereas we were well and truly dry bum-raped with the fee accepted for stonesy, sell on fee or not, which was probably as bad a piece of business I've witnessed in 30 odd years of following the reds imho.
I rate Holgate higher than most it seems tyrone, I reckon he'll carve out a career with plenty of top flight football included. But Stones will go on to be an England great, one of the best in the world. I don't think Holgate is at that level. He 'could' (who's to say how he'll develop) but I'd not say easily. Hope you're right though, particularly if we've got a sell on clause.
I think Holgate's a great talent, I've no idea how far he can go but I wouldn't say there's a limit or ceiling if he continues his rapid development. As LJ said today, he's still growing, he could gain another yard of pace, fill out etc, and he's at one of the finest clubs in the land for looking after young players with a manager who gives kids a chance. Is he as good as John Stones? I dunno. Time will tell. I hope he goes on to prove to be even better than Stonesy, because it suits BFC financially if he does so.
I still can't believe how we've managed to pull this off. Probably the best bit of business we have ever done.
Way too easy to say. As a result, any team splashing out money on a player with only limited 3rd division game time is taking a risk. Massive upside & relatively low downside to a large club. Not a bad fee for us either to reinvest. If we start climbing the leagues we will hang on to these lads longer.
I think we've done OK as noted in earlier posts, but we're still losing a player of huge potential, just we appear to have got a very fair deal (for once). Best bit of business we've ever done surely has to be getting £750,000 for Scott Flinders?!
i'm getting far more wound up about the haters, than anything mason holgate is meant to have done. i really hope he goes on to play for barcelona and wins 200 england caps. if i were him, i'd have every single one of these snidey comments printed off and pinned to my wall.
It's hard to compare the two as stones had some dodgy games for us when he had cranie at the side of him. When he had bobby hassell there he looked a world beater. Holgate hasn't had the luxury of a composed and experienced player at the side of him to learn from
Mason has a talent there is no doubt but he doesn't have the special talent that Stones has and in my opinion he will never be at the same level as Stones.
Agree hope he goes on to be a world beater at Everton who sell him for Zillions , after that who cares
