I'm passing this thread on to supporters of his potential new club, who are keen to get the lowdown on Mason, in terms of his ability. Is he the real deal in your opinion? Is he the 'next' John Stones? All replies appreciated, but can we stick to discussing his ability, and leave out the other stuff, because we've countless threads on all that. Cheers.
My opinion. I think Stones is a good player. Potentially an England great. Based on games they have both played for Barnsley - a similar number - I would say Holgate is as good. Possibly even more versatile. That said, Stones is a better professional so far - mature and level-headed. Holgate's progress may be interspered with outbreaks of Sterling-isms.
Stones played for us in the Championship and looked quality. Holgate has been playing for us in L1 and looked good but nothing out of the ordinary. I think people get carried away because of his age.
Very comfortable in possession, good tackler & header and has the imagination to take the ball past an opponent. Concentration & awareness can sometimes be an issue. But this is understandable for an 18 year old just starting his footballing career. I believe our excellent Academy has produced yet another gem. I'm not into this comparison with John Stones malarkey. If a defender isn't as good as John, does that mean he isn't a decent player?
Doubt he'll turn out to be as good as John Stones is going to be. Still needs to fill out a fair bit if he's going to be a top class centre back. Has the technical ability though. Needs to be more consistent. Has some top games for us but then others (e.g. Colchester away last season) he looks decidedly average. That should come with experience though. Definitely buying potential rather than the finished article. Stones was a much better player when he left us than Holgate currently is. £1 million plus add ons is a fair price in my opinion.
He's no Stones, not saying he's poor by any stretch but not in the same league (yet) as Stones Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Holgates good. Very good in fact. He's so classy on the ball and got the natural ability to just drift past a player. He's made the game look easy in league one. His defending is solid too. It's very difficult to compare him to Stones as they played in different divisions. But Holgate looked just as comfortable in League One as Stones did in the Championship. I think Holgate will have a good career in the top 2 divisions but I don't think he'll ever be an England regular. Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
Holgate is one of the best young players we've brought through. With good coaching there's no reason at all why he can't go on to have a good career in the top flight. Might need to get a better agent though, because he can do without one who is going to constantly annoy his employers.
An excellent young player. Too early in his career to say he will be this or that but the potential is there. Given good coaching you can see him developing strongly. His confidence on the ball is his main attribute. He has the ability and imagination to beat a player and look for a progressive pass. He is good in the air and both a good timer of tackles and a firm tackler. Unsurprisingly for a young fella more work needs to be done on his positioning but that will come with playing more games. In short an excellent prospect for any club and a credit to the Academy coaches who developed him. Comparing him to Stones or anyone else is not worthwhile. Given the money in the premiership not really a gamble at all but would represent a shrewd investment in the future. The only note of caution is that he may have touring commitments with Rizzle Kicks.
Perhaps you'd be better off passing it to Patrick and Ben, given our self admission of "not knowing how good" our talent is.
About this good <img src="http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2008/02/04/steve_jobs_wideweb__430x300,0.jpg">
It's too early to tell, as he got delusions of grandeur after 22 games and I've only seen 5 of them. He could be a decent player at a decent level or anxious to secure a big money deal before he gets found out. He certainly needs to develop physically.
The most overrated player since Hugo Colace. Probably more so. Nowhere near the same class as John Stones. As I said last night he's not as good as Eaden and Moses. If we get £1m for him I would be over the moon. He leaves with no good wishes from me and I don't give a **** where he goes or what he does with his career. The sooner he goes the better for all concerned.
