SCARBOROUGH 0 BARNSLEY 2 (Williams, Nardiello) AN outstanding display by Scarborough shot stopper Leigh Walker prevented the Reds from running up a cricket score against the non-league side at the McCain Stadium last night. The Sheffield-born former Barnsley keeper was in inspired form throughout the game to deny the visitors time and time again only to be beaten twice in the first half after moments of real quality. The Reds could have been in front inside three minutes as Chris Shuker threaded the ball through to Nicky Wroe in space but the midfielder was denied by Walker's fine save. A minute later Shuker again caused problems with a deep cross that the Seadogs defence struggled to clear and Jacob Burns was inches away from opening the scoring with an acrobatic volley from the edge of the area. Barnsley struggled to settle defensively in the opening stages with Ashley Lyth and Mark Quale wasting decent opportunities before the Reds grabbed the lead on 17 minutes following a wonderful corner from Burn from the left. The cross beat the Boro defence to allow Robbie Williams the simplest of headers from ten yards. New signing Paul Hayes, who linked up wonderfully well with Daniel Nardiello throughout the first half, again brought the best out of Walker on 21 minutes with a well struck effort after a neat turn on the edge of the area. It should have been two just three minutes later as a moment of real quality from Shuker sent Nardiello clear at Walker but the striker was always stretching to reach the cross and could only prod the ball wide of an open goal. Nardiello was in again on 28 minutes as he raced onto Burns' pass but again found Walker in fine form as the Scarborough keeper somehow managed to parry his effort. Barnsley should have had a blatant penalty on 29 minutes as lumbering Scarborough defender Steve Baker pushed Hayes full in the back as the pair went for a header but the official, in his infinite wisdom, failed to see a foul from fully five yards away although the 500 or so Reds supporters behind the goal were in no doubt. Shuker went inches away from doubling the advantage a minute later with a right footed curler from the edge of the area that dropped just wide. The referee again had his eyes closed on the half hour as lumbering Boro defender Paul Foot twice raked his studs down the back of Nardiello's calf as the pair waited for the ball. Nardiello firmly shoved Foot's sledging back down his throat on 37 minutes as he planted a firm header past Walker and into the far corner after great play down the left by Hayes. The former Manchester United hitman almost grabbed his second on 49 minutes as he too advantage of a quick free kick but was again denied by Walker. Boro's best player was again in inspired form just after the hour mark as he somehow managed to claw Paul Reid's header away after Stephen McPhail's corner had picked out the defender on the penalty spot. Another McPhail corner on 66 minutes found Barry Conlon in space but the big striker was denied by Walker's acrobatic save. Walker again kept the score close two minutes later as Conlon turned well onto Williams' cross and shot for the bottom corner but was again denied by a fine save. BARNSLEY: Flinders (Colgan 60), Tonge (Harban 61), Austin, Vaughan, Reid (Laight 79), Shuker, Burns (McPhail 57), Wroe (Kay 57), R. Williams (Joynes 71), Hayes (Conlon 57), Nardiello (Jarman 67).
I wish the official reports were a bit more balanced That makes us sound like Real Madrid. Nothing wrong with accentuating the positives, but I'm pretty sure comments like 'lumbering Scarborough defender Steve Baker' are not necessary. We ought to show a bit of respect. Anyway, 2 games/2 wins. Onwards and upwards.
RE: I wish the official reports were a bit more balanced Get Hassell in central defence. Vaughan out. Causes more upset than enough him.
RE: I wish the official reports were a bit more balanced We played everyone but Carbon yesterday. I wonder if he's injured again.
RE: I wish the official reports were a bit more balanced Dunno. Nice to see Hayes & Nardy seemingly linking well. Central Defence concerns me greatly tho.
RE: I wish the official reports were a bit more balanced wonderfully well, apparentlt. Twas agen two lumbering defenders though.
RE: Aye I watched Frickley beat York last night. Scothern and Callum Selby laiked for us. Scothern missed two sitters but at least he's ditched the ridiculous mullet. James Dudgeon played for York.
RE: Aye You're not supposed to say "Scothern missed two sitters". Their 'keeper made two miraculous saves. Don't you know anything about sports reporting.
After reading that wonderful piece of prose from the pen of Rob Knowles... I now fully expect us to win the league and all three cup competitions Yooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu Reds
RE: Aye He was Ok, bit short of pace and according to his boss he needs a big centre half alongside him. Colin Walker is a coach at York so I guess that's why he's there.
OK Scothern grazed the corner flag with a trickler then worried the Shetland pony tethered in the allotments behind the goal with a less than scorching drive.
