Gary Johnson's side were the only unbeaten side in the Championship but they rarely threatened the Tykes defence in match which the home side dominated. Howard grabbed the opener in the 67th minute with a fine solo effort and Souza made it 2-0 with close-range finish in the 72nd minute before Devaney rounded of the game with a goal on the counter-attack in the 88th minute. Barnsley had begun the match positively and Grant McCann had tested Adriano Basso in the third minute. The Tykes midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and drilled a low shot but Basso was able to save the shot at full stretch. Barnsley looked the livelier of the two sides in the opening stages and had another good chance in the eighth minute. Howard broke from midfield and his shot from 25 yards was only gathered by Basso at the second attempt. The visitors' only real chance of the match was a counter-attack in the 12th minute. Neat interplay between Lee Trundle and Lee Johnson allowed Elliott space and the midfielder's shot from the edge of the penalty area forced Tykes goalkeeper Heinz Muller to tip the ball over the bar. The home side had a good shout for a penalty turned down in the 32nd minute. Howard jinked his way inside the box and unleashed a fierce drive into a crowd of players and the ball appeared to hit Liam Fontaine on the arm, but the referee waved away the appeals of the Tykes players. Simon Davey's side began the second half with the same vigour as the first and came close to opening the scoring in the 47th minute. Howard picked up the ball inside the centre circle and accelerated towards goal before he struck a shot which whistled just past the post. Three minutes later neat link-up play down the right flank between Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Miguel Mossto freed Howard inside the area. But he failed to gain enough power on his shot from a tight angle and Basso was able to save at his near post. Howard's persistence eventually paid off in the 67th minute with a fine individual effort. The Tykes midfielder made a powerful run in the final third of the Bristol City half before cutting inside. Howard then curled the ball left-footed into the bottom-left corner and past the despairing dive of Basso, to score his sixth goal of the season. Five minutes later the home side made it 2-0 after a mistake by Basso. German defender Dominik Werling drilled a free-kick from the left edge of the penalty area and Basso parried the ball. Brazilian defender Souza was the first to react and smashed the ball into the roof of the net from inside the six-yard box. Substitute Devaney added a third goal in the 88th minute. The right-sided midfielder controlled a long ball from the Barnsley defence on the right edge of the box. He then struck a low shot into the bottom-left corner which Basso got a hand on but was unable to keep out.
"Dominik Werling drilled a free-kick from the left edge of the penalty area" EDGE!!!! What size penalty areas do they think we have!!??!!??!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!? Respect to their 'keeper for going anywhere near it!!
RE: "Dominik Werling drilled a free-kick from the left edge of the penalty area" Never noticed that bit mate? Ours must about 30 yards, lol!
The Sky reporter said something along the lines of... Werling wears number 55 and he must have been about 55 yards out when he hit the free kick!!! Ok it wasn't 55 yards but it was nearer 55 than 18! I've had my wrist broken stopping a shot and there is a strong possibility that Werling's shots could break bones! If we ever get into a penalty shoot-out he has to take the first one to poleaxe the opposition 'keeper....
