FULL TIME FROM BLOOMFIELD ROAD BLACKPOOL 2 (Vernon 70, 119) BARNSLEY 2 (Williams P 53, Devaney 116) NEW signing Vito Mannone was the Reds hero as his shootout save from Keigan Parker helped put the Reds into Round Two. Parker missed his vital spot kick to give Bobby Hassell the chance to win it and the full back smashed the winning penalty past Rhys Evans to give the Reds a 4-2 shoot out victory. Reds boss Andy Ritchie had the rare luxury of being able to rest eight of the team that had performed so well in the Coca Cola Championship to date with only Paul Reid, Bobby Hassell and Williams remaining from last weekend's draw with Southampton. Michael Coulson, Colin Healy, Anthony McParland and on loan keeper Vito Mannone all made their full first team debuts in a young looking side and there were also first starts of the campaign for Nicky Wroe, Dale Tonge, Tommy Wright and Nathan Jarman. A strong looking Reds bench included Nick Colgan, Paul Hayes, Michael McIndoe and Martin Devaney. Blackpool named former Reds trainee Rory Prendergast in their starting eleven although Keigan Parker, who tormented Barnsley when the two teams met back in April, was left on the bench. Pool also handed a home debut to former Coventry striker Andy Morrell. Wright, who was obviously pumped up to face his former club, was involved in the first controversial incident with just three minutes on the clock as his aerial challenge left Seasiders defender Ian Evatt bloodied and dazed. The referee gave Wright a lecture but nothing more. It was Coulson's turn to anger the official just two minutes later as he raced towards Tonge's right wing cross but collided heavily with keeper Rhys Evans. The keeper six-foot plus ended up in a heap and Coulson was shown a harsh yellow card. Blackpool responded with Morrell and Vernon combining well to find Keith Southern in space on eight minutes but the midfielder's volley flew harmlessly over the top. Two minutes later David Fox's quick free kick caused more problems for the Reds but a combination of Reid and Hassell were able to clear the danger. At the other end Wright showed his quality in the air on eleven minutes when he beat Evatt easily to a high ball and flicked it on into Jarman's path. The youngster's fine first touch opened up half a yard of space but his snap shot flew inches over Evans' bar. Mannone was a commanding presence in goal and simply oozed quality and confidence in everything he did throughout the opening stages none more so than on 23 minutes when he came out through a crowded penalty box to punch Fox's free kick well clear of danger. Blackpool probed through Vernon, Fox, Morrell and Wes Hoolahan but really lacked a killer ball or any quality to unlock a Reds defence which dealt comfortably with whatever the Seasiders could throw at them. They almost got things right on the half hour as a quick break from a Barnsley corner left the Reds outnumbered and gave Southern a shooting chance but Mannone made a fine save low at his right hand post. Again the Seasiders lack of real quality came to the fore on 32 minutes as Morrell's flick found Vernon in acres of space but the former Oldham striker's volley posed more danger to the corner flag than Mannone's goal. Wright, who turned down Blackpool in favour of a move to Oakwell last season, almost silenced the Seasider's fans taunts in spectacular fashion on 37 minutes as he broke purposefully from the half way line before crashing a low drive inches wide of the post from 25 yards. A minute later Wroe almost broke the deadlock after neat build up play had given the midfielder a shooting chance on the edge of the area. His shot looked to be heading goalward only for a late deflection to take it over the bar. Williams went even close from McParland's resulting corner as his header crashed away off the upright with Evans well beaten. Vernon again fashioned half a chance for the home side on 44 minutes as he tricked his way into the area under pressure from Hassell but again found Mannone a huge obstacle as the Arsenal keeper comfortably dealt with his low shot. Again Vernon stole half a yard in stoppage time as he beat the Reds defence to Woolahan's corner but put his shot high over the top. The Reds started the second half well and really should have been in front on 50 minutes as Wright felt the full force of Michael Jackson's clumsy challenge in the area. The referee pointed to the spot but Wright saw his low penalty brilliantly saved by Evans. Barnsley did not let the momentum drop and within two minutes Tonge flicked the ball past Fox in the area only for the Blackpool midfielder to stick out his leg and send the full back sprawling. This time Williams stood up to hammer the penalty kick off Evans and into the top corner. Evans had to really be at his best on 58 minutes as he came racing from his goal to beat Coulson to Healy's through ball and fortunately managed to claim it before the Reds youngster could get a killer touch. Blackpool responded by throwing on Parker for the ineffective Prendergast on 61 minutes and it the visitors finally managed to create a decent opportunity on goal just two minutes later as Morrell struck the ball well from 18 yards but again Mannone made the save look easy. Vernon again continued his personal duel with Mannone on 64 minutes as he somehow managed to get in behind Williams but the Reds keeper stood up well to the challenge and made a smart save. From the rebound Fox saw his bouncing shot deflect well wide of the target. At the other end Jarman saw a decent low drive hacked over his own bar by Jackson on 67 minutes after the Pool defence had failed to deal with McParland's deep corner. Another corner, this time from Blackpool's Hoolahan almost gifted the home side an equaliser as skipper Jackson fashioned himself half a yard before volleying high over the top on 69 minutes. Blackpool's leveller also had a touch of controversy about it as Parker's theatrical fall under Hassell's challenge gifted the home side a free kick, which the referee initially failed to give. Fox's delivery was though was perfect and Vernon nodded the ball past Mannone and into the far corner. Southern really should have put Pool into the lead just two minutes later as he found himself free of his marker just six yards from goal but somehow put an easy header well, well wide of the target. Hoolahan was again proving a useful outlet for the Seasiders and the youngsters' corner on 76 minutes gave Vernon a great chance 16 yards out but Reid was in the right place to deflect his header over the bar. Substitute Hayes almost cost the Reds the chance of going into extra time as his outrageous back heel presented the home side a great chance in stoppage time and Vernon again broke into the area but this time Mannone made a fine low save to deny the striker a certain winner. Hoolahan was next to try his luck and he ghosted past three players at pace before breaking into the area but again the Italian keeper was in the right place to save. Blackpool started extra time brightly and Vernon again found a yard of space with just seconds on the clock but could only shoot straight at Mannone from 18 yards. Two minutes later it was Jarman's turn to test out his shooting boots from distance but the youngster dragged his effort well wide. Devaney almost fashioned an opening for himself on 95 minutes as he raced in from the right touchline but could only prod his shot wide under pressure from Marcus Bean. Parker looked determined to send a message to boss Simon Grayson, who had left him out of the starting eleven in recent weeks, and the diminutive striker again beat the Reds defence on 98 minutes but found his path to goal blocked by Mannone's fine save. The ball came out to Bean but Reid again put in a well-timed challenge to block the midfielder's drive. Evans really earned his money for the night on 112 minutes as he flung himself down to turn Wright's excellent header round the post. Evans then pulled off the save of the night just seconds later as Jarman met McIndoe's corner fiercely but the ex-Swindon Town keeper managed to turn his volley away onto the bar. Wright could not turn the rebound into the net. Williams went inches away from a late winner on 107 minutes as he met Devaney's free kick at the back post but his stooping header crept the wrong side of the upright. Again the Reds really should have been back in front just three minutes later as Wright broke free before bringing another fine save from Evans. The ball rebounded out to Jarman in acres of space but the youngster could only put his shot against the upright with virtually an open goal to aim at. At the other end Parker again twisted and turned the Reds all ends up on 112 minutes but put his rising shot over the bar from the edge of the area. Parker again caused no end of problems for Barnsley on 115 minutes as he swung in a dangerous free kick in from the right for Vernon to meet at the back post. The striker's header came across goal but Hassell was in the right place to clear. The Reds broke with pace and in a blink of an eye McIndoe had split the Blackpool defence wide open to send Devaney in on Evans and this time the winger did not miss and put his side back into the lead with a fine low finish. The lead lasted all of two minutes as Blackpool threw everything into a desperate attack. The Seasiders' bombardment paid off as Vernon stole in from the right to rifle an unstoppable effort off the underside of the bar and into the back of the net. It all came down to penalties - a familiar feeling for the Reds after their Cardiff heroics back in May - and after Vernon and McIndoe had found the target, Blackpool cracked first with Jackson striking the upright. Devaney's next spot kick was perfect and gave the Reds the advantage. Southern and Hayes netted before Parker missed from the spot to give Hassell the chance to put the Reds into Round Two. That must be from Blackpool website! Either that or RK doesn't like young Coulson! Evans had to really be at his best on 58 minutes as he came racing from his goal to beat Coulson to Healy's through ball and fortunately managed to claim it before the Reds youngster could get a killer touch.
