Just had tea, and we were discussing how info used to be relayed on a matchday (even until recently). Teletext - refresh the page and pray; (and also hope the signal was strong enough) or local radio in all its guises. Can people remember the Robert Jackson era on Radio Sheff? Thought he was very good as a presenter. and also, something I thought was brilliant, when I worked in Birmingham 20 years ago. The local radio station (BRMB) had this siren alert for a goal. When it went off, it was accompanied by "It's a goal"..... so you're ears would ***** up wondering which local ground there was a goal at. They'd then take you to the ground, for quick details, and then back to the main show...... I'm sure Radio Sheffield did it for a couple of years, cos I remember the feeling of pulse quickening, wondering where the goal had gone in. The best bit was when two or three goals went in in quick succession - you'd be all over the place.
I remember the Robert Jackson era pretty well - I'm sure him (or his team) coined the phrase 'praise or grumble'- or as my mate used to say 'moan or groan' - as full time beckoned - long long before anyone knew how much added time was to be added on Robert Jackson used to play some regimental music by the Royal Dragoon Guards (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) which as he used to say always produced a (much needed) goal. This was in the days of constantly re-tuning the VHF (yes VHF not FM) radio
Watching a penalty shoot out on teletext has to be the most nerve-wracking experience for any football fan! The occasion I can remember was a JPT tie away at Notts Co., so much a huge deal riding on it but I was still having kittens!
