Walsall’s hopes of keeping on-loan midfielder Dwayne Mattis received a boost today as Barnsley hinted they would accept a cut-price fee.

Saddlers boss Richard Money is keen to extend Mattis’s loan beyond the initial month after three impressive displays in the last week.

But supporters’ attentions have already switched to the January transfer window, and sources in south Yorkshire suggest the Tykes are ready to cut their losses on their £50,000 summer signing.

Barnsley paid £50,000 to take Mattis from Bury last January after his impressive performances for the Shakers grabbed the attention of Championship and League One clubs.

But he made just four appearances for Barnsley before heading out of Oakwell to join the Saddlers on loan 12 days ago.

Barnsley manager Simon Davey said: “Every player on the planet has a price and we will listen to what Walsall have to say.”

I thought the initial fee was 25k, plus the next 25k when we stayed up?

I thought it was what Mark said as well. Ten months of wages on top of 75k and it gives you an idea of how much we could end up losing by getting rid on the cheap.
