Cardiff City captain Stephen McPhail was subjected to a torrent of abuse as he re-visited former club Barnsley FC this weekend.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder left Barnsley on a free transfer citing a lack of ambition at the Yorkshire club, and made the move to South Wales. He has been an almost ever-present in Dave Jones' side and has been made captain in the absence of Purse and Scimeca.

McPhail's every touch was booed on Saturday, and the Oakwell faithful took great delight in cheering some of McPhail's wayward shots, including one open goal - again missed and greeted by one of the loadest cheers of the day.

Cardiff failed to take their chances, and indeed create clear cut chances while Brian Howard, similar in stature and style to McPhail outshone his former colleague. That McPhail failed to dictate the game is always a mark of Cardiff City struggling although he did control some aspects well, it seems the former Leeds United player was affected by his reception.

McPhail picked up a yellow card for dissent, and could consider himself slightly fortunate not to have been shown a second after making to run towards the referee shouting - he thought better of it just in time.</p>
