McPhail gives backing to Reds survival OAKWELL old boy Stephen McPhail has tipped Barnsley to survive in the Championship. The Irishman, who skippered Cardiff to a 2-0 win over Barnsley on Friday, said: "Like Southend and Colchester they (Barnsley) have had to cope with a lot coming up from League One to play at Championship level week in week out. "Barnsley have been finding it tough so far but I know they've got enough about them to stay up." Results on Saturday kept the Reds out of the relegation places by just one point. First half goals from Peter Whittingham and Michael Chopra brought the 17th league defeat of the season and Barnsley boss Simon Davey commented: "One of the positives we can take out of the second half is that we had most of the possession, we passed the ball well, we created chances but unfortunately we didn't score but on another day it will be different. "We've got a lot of games left and I'm sure those chances will be converted in the future." Centre back Antony Kay gave away possession which led to Cardiff's first goal and his foul on Michael Chopra conceded the free-kick from which Chopra scored. Davey said: "The reason we're in the position that we are is because we give silly goals away. For the previous two games defensively we've been sound, two clean sheets and we've won the games. We've come to Cardiff and we've been disappointing in certain parts of the game and they were crucial times. "We've got 16 games left and losing at Cardiff is not going to send us down." Welshman Davey had his parents at the match. "I'm born and bread in Swansea, it would have been nice to take something from Cardiff. My mum and dad were in the crowd - they watched me at Leicester and we lost that game so they're not coming again!" he laughed. "But this is not about Swansea it's about Barnsley. The most important thing is that we start picking up points and that we stay in this division." 05 February 2007
