But as the squad left for Wales today, the 26-year-old insisted he was focused on taking Barnsley up, despite persistent speculation linking him with Cardiff City and Hull. Said McPhail: "I've spoken to the gaffer and we're concentrating fully on this game. "About Monday or Tuesday next week I'll start thinking about what's going to happen." Sheffield Wednesday were also said to be interest in McPhail but that report was dismissed by a source at the club. Barnsley are braced to lose players if they fail in the final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Chairman Gordon Shepherd said: "I don't think we'd lose too many players, maybe one or two will move on. I do think that we pay reasonable salaries and if one or two want to move on to play at a higher level, you can understand that. You can understand ambition in any walk of life. But I think we'll retain most of them." McPhail, captain Paul Reid, defender Bobby Hassell and goalkeeper Nick Colgan are among the senior players out of contract. McPhail is one of nine Barnsley players who will be making their first appearance at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. It won't be the biggest stage he has played on. He went to Barcelona with Leeds United for Champions League match which drew an 85,000 crowd "I've never played at Cardiff so I'm looking forward to it. It looks great on the telly," he said. "I've played in some probably bigger stadiums but I'm sure the atmosphere will be as good as anywhere I've played. "So much goes on before you even get on the pitch, it takes your mind off the game. Over the next few days we'll be concentrating on the main thing."</div><div class="va-date" id="va-date">25 May 2006</div><div class="left"><div class="inactive">« Previous Page</div></div><div class="right"><div class="inactive">Next »</div></div>
I think we have adopted a sensible policy that will ultimately benefit everybody, whatever happens on Saturday.</p>
If we lose our best players.its down to Mr Shepherd. They should have had contracts sorted before now.
How? Honestly, how? We don't know what division we'll be in, a few of the players probably don't know if they want to stay if we're still in League One..how is it possibly feasable to sign players to contracts that we don't know if we can afford? We've made that mistake before. Of course, Ridsdale would have given them all £20k a week and a goldfish each. That would have been much better.
A business needs forward planning.....not allowing its key people to leave. Lat thing this club needs is a summer of building another team again.
RE: A business needs forward planning.....not allowing its key people to leave. fool . how can you forward plan any business when you dont know in which area you are going to be trading in ? its like b and q buying tons of stock then finding out they can only open a corner shop not a warehouse !!
If he made an offer, McPhail wouldn't sign at this point After all, he had a contract option at the end of last season, but did not sign until the eve of this season. Wasn't HE messing us around? What makes you think he would take an offer this time around? He'll edge his bets for a decent pay day in the championship (as will most of the players).
RE: A business needs forward planning.....not allowing its key people to leave. Funny how works at many clubs.Eastwood,Trundle, all Huddesfield squad most of Brentford squad all under contract.Discussions should not wait until the contract runs down.
And how do you know.. that we haven't forward planned behind the scenes? Jesuuus. Some people can never be happy. There is nothing we could do - when we signed up people like Marc Richards for next season, people complained INCASE we went up because he wasn't good enough. The club can't win.
Ok, budget for the worse case scenario That would mean another season in league one. At this stage, contracts would need to be offered on that basis. If some of the present contracts (McPhail) are above average for league one, this would mena a pay cut for most of the out of contract people. Watfords promotion budget was £4m. Any ideas what we have spent this season in comparison to our peers?
I would have thought that preliminary talks would have been held, with all those out of contract this summer, along the lines of: If we stay in this division we can offer you £x per week and a contract for x years If we go up to the Championship then we can offer you £x per week and a contract for x years at the end of the season, be it the beginning or end of May we will be able to discuss the matter further.
Same with Shuker wasn't it he was offered a 2 year deal but wanted a 1 year one which he eventually signed.
Or how about... "If we go up the championship, we will probably be looking to get someone better in."
I think that's correct. These days, it's all bluff and counter bluff. Personally, I'm with the chairman on this one.
Me too, I'm sure the players will have been spoken to and they know the situation and final negotiations will start next week when we confirm the championship place.
I'm not a betting person. Mr Cryne has invested heavily financially in the Club and Mr Shepherd with his time and business sense so I can't believe that talks have not taken place. This Club is moving forward and all staff connected with it must know where they stand by now.
RE: I'm not a betting person. There have been some financial improvements however dont you think the club shop and ticket offices look a little bit scruffy these days.hand written messages dirty windows? Its not the professional image we should be portray.
