    Cardiff City are set to discover next week whether their bid to bring Stephen McPhail to Ninian Park has been successful.

    The Barnsley midfielder is at the centre of a tug-of-war between the Bluebirds and fellow Championship clubs Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday.

    However, the Echo understands Cardiff are heading the queue as talks continue in the chase for the London-born player.

    The 10-times capped Republic of Ireland international is out of contract at Oakwell and will decide where his future lies when he returns from holiday next Wednesday.

    And McPhail, 27, is a key target for City boss Dave Jones, who is ready to swoop for the left-footed cultured midfield man.

    The way he was talking...

    ...I don't think he ever gave us the chance.

    He was going to leave this summer no matter what, and to be fair I'm not too bothered.

    5 months effort out of 24? No thanks.
