Cardiff winning chase for McPhail

McPhail has won 10 caps for Republic of Ireland
Cardiff City are close to signing Stephen McPhail on a free transfer, BBC Wales Sport understands.
McPhail, who played a pivotal role in Barnsley's promotion to the Championship via the play-offs last season, is out of contract next month.

The 26-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder has also been linked with a move to Championship side Hull City.

He joined Barnsley on a free transfer two years ago after being released after seven years at Leeds United.

Let him go really wanted to see him stay, but were not a one man team and by the end of next season he will definatly regret this decision, YOU REDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are so far in debt i am surprised they are able to sign anyone.

Coz they are broke and have no money.

    And are essentially going nowhere.

    RE: Why?

Well he apparently wants to go to a club that's ambitious, but surely a club that's allegedly £28m in debt is going to flounder soon. Plus he's ex-Leeds and would have to move his family again. Things like that might be worth it should Cardiff be in good shape, but they're clearly not.

    So, in summary:

    1) Cardiff isn't much of a 'step-up'
    2) They're massively in debt so their future is a little dodgy
    3) He'll have to uproot all his family who he has said in the past is settled in the area
    4) If I was an ex-Leeds player and Leeds fan, there's a number of reasons why I wouldn't want to go to Cardiff.

Hallam FM Has Just Stated That Hull Have Officially Offered Him Terms...

I think Leeds are the only team he'll leave us for. 2nd would be Cardiff, but I think it'll be too far for him........

Ridsdale is at Cardiff and he's the one behind getting

McPhail here in the first place. Will he want to uproot that far though if he doesn't need to?

Beautiful house in Leeds, established in the area for 9 years, two years married to wife with friends locally. To uproot to South Wales to a club in a similar division, in financial meltdown, I find highly unlikely.

All down to what is being offered financially I expect. I believe that he was on about £18k a week for the last couple of years with Leeds paying £16k of that, if our wage structure doesn't allow us to go much higher than the £2k we've been paying him and Cardiff can offer, for example, £5k a week it might be an attractive proposition for him.

Having said that I really expect that the only club he'll leave us for is Leeds - they could afford to give him a good deal given they could probably pay him less to play for them than they have been paying him not to play for them!

I heard last night that Leeds are still to pick up an element of McPhail's wages next year, anyone know the definitive on that ?

Also they are still paying some of Danny Mills wages until 2009.

That Ridsdale eh ???? Cardiff for you Stephen ????

Not sure it is just spin

Usual thing, friend of friend etc ... but from someone I trust very much I was told over a week ago that McPhail himself had said he was off to Cardiff.

That's ballax. He was on £10k a week at Leeds and they picked up 70% of that for his first year with us. His contract with them would have run out at end of last season anyway.

That adds up as the Leeds balance sheet for 2004

shows that they owed him about £350k.
