"Experts have warned the traditional English breakfast is a double cancer risk death trap.

Bacon and sausages, the basis of a fry-up, are processed meats which are linked to an increased risk of developing bowel cancer. And greasy additions of fried bread, fried egg and black pudding result in a hefty calorie count that can lead to obesity - and a raised risk of suffering a host of other types of cancer. Lovers of the English-breakfast are 63% more likely to develop bowel cancer if they tuck into two sausages and three rashers of bacon daily, The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) warned. The charity added that the evidence that processed meat is a cause of bowel cancer is so strong, people should avoid eating it. There is also convincing scientific evidence that excess body fat is linked to six different types of cancer, including bowel cancer and breast cancer, the WCRF said.
Experts now believe that, after not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing people can do to prevent getting the disease.
Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser for WCRF, said: "For some people, having a fry-up with bacon and sausages might seem like a good way to start the day.
"But if you are doing this regularly then you are significantly increasing your risk of bowel cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in the UK. Only a third of people are aware of the link between processed meat and cancer, which means two thirds of people are not in a position to make an informed choice about how much of it they eat. This is not a question of all or nothing because the more processed meat you eat, the greater your risk. As well as the processed meat increasing the risk of bowel cancer, fry-ups also tend to be high in calories. We recommend people limit consumption of high calorie, or energy dense foods because eating them regularly makes you more likely to gain weight."

"This is important because there is convincing evidence excess body fat increases risk of six different types of cancer."

In terms of overall risk, the chances of developing bowel cancer are one in 18 for men and one in 20 for women in the UK."

You can't smoke, your drink is regulated to so-many units per day, and now you can't have a good breakfast? What next?!

I can't believe that anyone in the world would actually think a fry up every day would be okay for your health.

Atkins Diet?

Cut the carbs, bacon & egg is encouraged with that diet. Should actually look at the sugar content of foods, now that is shocking!!

Isn't that diet meant to be for limited periods? as opposed to a life style choice.

To its extreme level yes, but it encourages you to cut carbs as a lifestyle choice, sweets, pop etc. You do feel alot better, but need self control to acomplish it

And isn't it criticised by just about every health expert out there.

Fry ups aren't good for you? Hold the front page.

There's no doubt it helps you lose weight

There's plenty of evidence out there for that. But there's a lot more to health than just your weight. And I'm surprised you say you felt better on it. The TV shows I saw presented evidence of the dieters feeling lethargic with aches and pains all over, trouble with going to the toilet and very bad breath.

Hardly anyone does the Atkins properly.

It's a quick fix but the most important part, the exit strategy, is largely ignored which is why so many people end up bigger than before.

Very True Windy

It's a quick fix, but I never suffered any of the effects mentioned by Jay, certainly not lethargic. As I said, it educated me to eat less sugar, trust me you need to look at the current amounts we each eat, it's unbelievable. I am not on the diet as such, but avoid the heavy sugar items like the plague, never put a pound back on, but to be fair it was easy for me to do the diet being next door to Vera's cafe (RIP) for 3 years!! :D

Make your own

Had great fun last weekend making sausages.
Took all day and I am sure any health issues are canceled out by running after the pigs in the first place

God save us from experts...

FACT... Italians have a high proportion of processed meats in their dies. Salamis, hams, lard (marinated slices of fat)
FACT... The population of Le Marche in Italy, being a rural based economy is a major producer (and consumer) of that type of produce.
FACT... Le Marche has the highest life expectancy of any region in Italy and Italy has one of, if not the, highest life expectancy in Europe.
FACT... Exercise DOES play a major factor in reducing cholesterol -more so than diet my Dr tells me (I have high cholesterol). The body produces it in higher amounts for some people pre-disposed to higher levels of 'bad' cholesterol. Low cholesterol diet, whilst a major factor alone does not solve the problem. Regular exercise on the other hand will reduce Cholesterol levels. Whilst 'Windy' states you cannot burn off cholesterol he means the hardened arteries etc. cannot be reversed but you CAN reduce the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream through exercise. This is possibly why people in Le Marche who lead active lives being farmers etc. eat lots of processed fatty meats etc but have little heart disease.

We are all going to die anyway so if Cancer and Heart disease dont get us summat else will - probably worry from trying to avoid all the things experts tell us to avoid ) and not noticing the guy following us down the alleyway wielding a big knife!

A little of what you fancy etc etc. Experts - ha!! Sod 'em!!!
