We went for a 50th Birthday party last night and there was a party of 19 of us. We had pre-booked our meals 2 weeks ago so they knew what and who was having.
It didnt bode well when we were asked why there were 19 and not 18 of us!! then...it went worse!! heres the highlights

Meals came out and chips/veg/potatos took 0ver 15 mins to come then there wasnt enough to go around (about 2 bowls of chips per 10 people)

1 person ordered beef sizzler and got chicken and waitress said she didnt know the difference!!

The waitress tried to pass a 8 oz sirloin steak off as 16 oz and tried this twice!!

1 person didnt get fed AT ALL!!!!

the person who didnt get fed said to the waitress that she wanted to speak to a manager and she said "youll find im more than a waitress love" my friend said she knew her rights and wanted the landlord and the gobby manageress then said "Oh shut up miss know it all!!"
OMG!! how can someone talk to paying customers like that????????

another table also complained about them trying to pass a rump steak off as ribeye and the 'manageress'said "just shut up and eat your food"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The landlord was even worse! when I said I had run pubs and hotels and I would have either tried to give free drinks or a 15% discount he told me it was his pub and he would run it how he wanted to!!! INTO THE GROUND?????

The guy also runs The Shambles in town but in my opinion the Cross Keys is more of a Shambles!!!!

NEVER EVER WILL I EAT IN THERE AND THE STAFF ARE THE RUDEST IN THE COUNTRY IN MY OWN OPINION

She alone alienated 28 customers in 5 minutes from different parties. a fete not even our Keef could do with an interview!!

Anyone reading your comments, mate, will also think twice about going there for meal now. In fact, it doesn't endear itself to potential customers who might've gone in for just a drink.

Think I would have paid what I thought it was worth - nothing but the drinks bill

    Was this the landlord?

I'm sure there's a few people on here know Sav and won't be that surprised by OP's post.

Has just bought the Soul Bar with Dave Clayton, the Oakwell Stadium announcer, he is also one of Brian Howard's old drinking buddies, bit of a character.

I thought I remembered him from the Full House, I thought it was because he owned it , not because he was pissed up with Howard!

I've heard a few bad reviews about the Cross Keys also. Sav doesn't own the Full House either. He ran that into the ground due to lack of people skills etc. it has now been run by new Landlady Nicola who is doing a brilliant job. I went for Carvery for Mother's day and had a fantastic meal and I've never seem it as busy.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience Chester. Not 300 yards down the road i took my mother for a mother's day Sunday lunch to the Hare n Hounds also at Hoyland Common where our meal was quite the opposite. Well organised, friendly staff and good food and prompt service.

2 years ago i took her to the Elphant n Castle at Hemingfield. That was bad. They had clearly booked more people than they could cater for and groups of people were seated at certain hours.Had we booked a later seating (2pm) we would probably had our meal at 4pm. People in a large group next to us also complained of length of time they were waiting and people eating different courses at different times. They did argue with the manager and refused to pay full price.

The thing is you don't know what you are going to get unless you experience it for yourself and also whether or not you believe the reviews you read.Needless to say your concerns expressed on here may have an affect on some future business for that pub.
