You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who likes the idea of means testing for pensions and it appears the most vehement opposition comes from the left but aren't they going against what they're supposed to stand for? ...."each according to his means" and all that.

    Just asking like.

Well it's a difficult one really.

I can see both sides of this.

The bottom line is that pensions have to be paid for - so if we want higher state pensions it means higher taxes, but then, if you means test, the people who pay the most in taxes receive the least benefit. Of course means testing allows you to put the funds where they are needed the most.
But does it really encourage people to save for the future when they see other people who piss there money up against the wall and spend it as soon as they have it getting just as much.
My parents both saved for their retirement, my mum (god rest her) used to say that she might as well just spend all her savings as if she had to go into a home they'd take it off her to pay for her care whilst those who didn't bother saving got it paid for her.

I don't think theres any fair way.

"each according to his ability" would be a more accurate reading of a democratic socialist traditional Labor position.

You young uns should all knock out more kids so that I can retire in comfort.

Wrong half of the phrase y'pillock.

It goes, "From each according to his ability to each according to his needs."

    Do you get it now?

    No mate.

The Marx quote goes, "From each according to his ability to each according to his NEEDS."

I think the supposed socialist related sixth-form politics phrase Kevin the Klown is struggling to remember is "From each according to his ability to each according to his DEEDS" but he's managed to concoct an ethos more suited to capitalism. In short he's tried to be clever and hit the corner flag again.

Don't expect him to stop digging though. He's always good for a laugh is our Kev.

    Re oh dear

sorry about the delayed response as I do have a life unlike yourself who seems to be permanently ensconced on this board, why is that I wonder ?

Explain to me why are you reducing all socialist thought down to Marxist philosophy and political economy ?

I'm reviewing my image of you by the way. Always thought of you as being fat, a bit camp, a somewhat inadequate bully actually.
Is the reason your permanently on here due to the fact that you are a cri, err spa, err dis, less abled and your carer puts your wheelchair in front of the pc every morning and turns reverse gear off.

I think we should be told.

Remember your phrase some time ago "you really hate me don't you " (whimper whimper)

    mmmwwwaaaahhh

should equal access to all and equality apply when those that have more have gained it via a capitalist state? can you adopt a true socialist ethos when living in a capitalist state? i think probs not.

adopting socialist thought in a capitalist state is frought with difficulty as you can not stay true to socialist theorism. pragmatism is probably more apt although the left have a tendency to flit between socialist thought and pragmatism. don't think machiavelli gets a look in

Sorry I took so long to reply to your essay cupcake.....

....I was out "having a life." Once again, you need to get your irony filter checked luvvie.

Is that how you've "always thought of me"? You don't enter my mind from one pusillanimous little dig to the next. I'd commend you on your attempt at "smokescreaming" your blunder but, well, taking the piss out of the disabled? Low even by your standards.

So let's get back to the point. "From each according to his ability to each according to his ability." You're happy with that are you?
