As some posters on here will know I was a constant supporter of Hill. The main reason for me was that in the longer term I think Hill would have done a good developmental job... I also wanted to keep Hill because I am sick to death of the chop and change mentality at Oakwell over the last ten years and believed it would be in our longer term interests to keep Hill. However, all that is now past, so for my latest rant/comment/thought I would like to say that regardless of relegation or survival the board should now give Filtcroft a meaningful contract over two-three years so he can develop things further. We must have a manager at the end of the day who is given time.... Flitcroft has certainly improved team ethic and he should be given the full backing of the board in the close season to bring in/ship out who he wants. If he is still here in September and results are not brilliant then we should remember what he has done already, back him and try and give some continuity to the management team.
Yes, I know there are problems with my hypothesis/ideas but I say again that managers of the Reds do not get enough time to develop the club and Flitcroft should now be given some time just as Hill should have (in my opinion) and just as some others perhaps should have. We have limited funds so perhaps a manager like Flitcroft who inspires team spirit may be the sort of person who we need in any event. I await comments regarding whether or not I am talking ******. Needless to say I dont think I am but hey ho....
    We are staying up!!!!

The full time contract should have been on the table weeks ago, but being Barnsley you know what's going to happen.

If we had stuck with Hill we would be down by now. The future of the club wouldn't have looked very good then

Weeks ago, both the club and Flicker said they were happy with current arrangements and nothing will be discussed until the end of the season.

The current deal runs until the end of the season and, asked about beyond the summer, Flitcroft added: "That is something that will be discussed at an appropriate time."

I think many will agree with your sentiments, KCP, but on a matter of practicalities it simply isn't possible to do what you suggest.

If we go down our revenues must surely fall, and that will affect where any longer term offer to Flicker is pitched in financial terms. If we stay up, it will be very largely due to the magnificent achievements of this brilliant young manager, and a contract in those circumstances must surely reflect his performance since appointment.

To resolve the contract issue now would necessitate a 'halfway house', where the club offer more than they probably would in the League One scenario, but Flicker receieves less than would be his entitlement if he acieves our survival. It would therefore be unsatisfactory to both sides. I can see the argument about tying him down, but we all know that is worthless in any event if a bigger club are prepared to splash the cash to acquire his services.

For once, therefore, I think the club are quite correct in their approach to this one.

That said, I have not seen a greater motivator at Oakwell in my 45 years of following the Reds. Flicker's commitment and football knowledge must surely guarantee him a very bright managerial future in the game - and I hope it's with us!
