can anyone remember a programme on television think it was in seventies something like "battle of the towns" or such like, where Barnsley were up against Wakefield in some sort of talent competition and Barnsley did a song called "wheers the goil oil" which was well funny but don't think audience knew what it was about, can remember bits of it but memories fading a bit anyone got a bit more info on it. think Eddie Waring was one of the judges.
Wow that takes me back It was called "Top Towns" by the BBC and I dont remember the particular song you mentioned but there was one about the Barnsley Six. Knees Up Knees Up Get thi knees up Running in the Barnsley Six. I seem to remember the competion was not well thought out and despite Barnsley beating all the towns they came across they were not allowed into the Final due to the number of points they scored.
Re: Wow that takes me back dint see em all but the one with "wheers the goil oil" had eddie waring judging and cos wakey was a rugby lge town he kept pulling us down and giving wakey high scores but the other judges kepy disagreeing with him and gave us their points. but the wheers the goil oil song was well funny the cast had 1900s kit on complete with big flat cap and the chrus line had them walking abouit with a hand above their eyes as if sighting sommat then singin wheers the goil oil rhyming wi summat like ive been all day in't coil oil. wonder if whichever station it was on would have any footage of it.
