Completely un-related to Barnsley FC, or football for that matter. Working up in Scotland at the minute, and indeed for the next year. Working on the Western Coast, the midges here are bloody terrible, never seen so many before! Does anyone know of any reliable methods of killing them? I have tried Avon "Skin So Soft" and Jungle Formula to protect against them. But actually killing them is a problem.

I sympathise with you. When I was in the Army we did an exercise up in Scotland one summer and it was really hot and the biggest problem wasn't the conditions, lack of sleep, food or anything else associated with spending over a week out in the field, the biggest problem was the midges. It seemed to get even worse when we applied cam cream and nothing seemed to repel them, not even the Army issue spray. I'll never forget it.

frying pan coated in olive oil. swing it around a bit and midges will stick to it. collect enough, shape into a patty, then cook on Barbie or fire - voila, a high protein burger!!

and revenge for them eating you!!

Go to Madagascar, collect 6 Madagascan Ground Geckos, then introduce them to the area where you work

Who would want to visit Scotland ???..........nice scenery but an horrible place........its either freezing yer nalecks off, peeeing it down OR you are covered in midges
If you are working outside in the summer then you need proper clothing.........which includes total body clothing including gloves and midge netting covering your head

I'm obviously assuming you've never been, and you're basing your views purely on third party reports :)

    great place

did 3 tours with the RAF up there at RAF Kinloss. Brilliant place... and its not all midges , they seem to keep to the west coast especially from around Oban up to Ullapool.. the other coasts seem ok from them.

Climb inside a wheelie bin liner and get a friend to tie a knot in the top very tightly. Cheap solution ;)

You need some swallows mate. Catching them can be a bugger, but once you've got them, design some little harnesses that still allow them to fly then tie the harnesses to your jacket on a long piece of string allowing the swallows to swoop and glide all around you. They'll eat thousands of midges. If you've got a decent barnet they can roost in your hair at night.
