Does anyone remember this match? Fulham 2-3 Barnsley 16/01/81 Ive been told Barnsley went top of the old Division 3 with this result and keeper got sent off. Is that right?
RE: I remember it. Can't remember who went in goal though no he wasnt in the team that day pierce, joyce, chambers, glavin, banks, mccarthy, evans, parker, aylott, lester and downes with riley sub. cant imagine riley taking over in goal!!
It was a Friday evening match i think. I was born that evening, so I wouldnt have a clue who was in goal obviously.
I think it was. Definitely rings a bell Even if he was a little bleeder. I was thinking through the team and I couldn't remember any of them going in goal, so I went for Neil Cooper, but now you mention Glynn Riley I'm sure it was him. There'll probably be someone who remembers and proves me wrong.
RE: Thanks to all for the info. http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/footydb/loadgen.asp?Day=16&Month=Jan&ssnno=110&teamno=50
it was a friday night match mate,i dont remember it myself as i was only 7 but i have the goals on an old compilation tapeb g
It was a Friday night match. Glyn Riley went in goal as Gary Pierce got injured, not sent off, & quite early in the first half, if memory serves. We were also at least 1-0 down when Riley went in goal. The match was part of a very long undefeated run which, amazingly in comparison to recent undefeated runs, had a large number of wins. The run came to a halt against Huddersfield.
I've got the programme for the following home game, the famous Enfield cup-tie. There are two pages of photos (black & white) - one page has Aylott and Parker's goals and Pierce being carried off, the other has 6 action shots of Riley in goal. There isn't a match report as such, but the following little piece: 'The fact that Barnsley were robbed of their proud position at the top of the table after just 19 1/2 hours does not rub off the gloss of their magnificent victory over Fulham last Friday night. 'In overcoming the handicap of losing goalkeeper Gary Pierce after only seven minutes, and then falling behind six minutes later, to record a 3-2 victory, they showed all the character and team spirit necessary to clinch promotion.' Prophetic words indeed. Ee - them were t' days!
Glyn Riley... Pierce wasn't sent off. He collided with the inside of the goalpost and ripped open his leg around the inside of the knee. There was no proper goalie and Riley was sub, so he went in goal (all 5'8" of him) and made at least one blinding save. After the match he commented that he hadn't played in goal since he was at school. Aylott, Banks and Parker scored for us. As it was a Friday game and not too far from the Beeb at Shepherd's Bush, it was fairly well covered in Football Focus (or equivalent) the following day. Jimmy Hill for once had something complimentary to say about our performance - a first and only! He stated how well Riley had done and highlighted a Ronnie Glavin 'moment of magic', which was a 'winger style' run down the left wing, beating player after player before just losing out in the final confrontation with the Fulham keeper. Hill, bless him, never quite sorted out Ronnie Glavin from the Spurs winger Galvin and thought for several season afterwards that Spurs had signed our player. Bless him! He often did get things a little wrong, didn't he? Attendance 5265.
I went to that match, we got to the ground 20 mins late cos of all the London rush hour traffic and when we got in we were 1.0 down with Riley in the nets! We thought it was going to be a wasted journey but we played brilliantly and went top of the league as a result. Remember getting up for Football Focus, or whatever it was called then, the following day despite not having much kip, just to see the league table with us on top, before all tghe other teams played!
Glyn Riley.......defo !!! To follow on with a little story, me and the girlfriend at that time went to the Old Horns at High Bradfield and I'd been listening to the score flashes on Radio Sheff in the car. Anyroad, at about ten o clock I went back out to the car leaving said g/f in pub and waited.... and waited ....and waited for the final score. Radio Sheff had decided that it was a good opportunity to play the full, nay very full, nay very very full version of Sultans of Swing, so ten, fifteen, or what seemed like an hour later finally came up with the score. Great.... now to face the abandoned face of wrath and doom. Eeeeeeh... all for football, eh.
RE: I think it was. Definitely rings a bell It was Riley. Thought Pierce was injured though (Knee possibly)
