What with Brexit and now COVID19, there's a massive problem coming up with regard to getting fruit etc from the fields to the shops. How would people feel about volunteering for this essential work? Personally since I'm on furlough and stuck at home all day I'd happily do it.
If it's an industry that needs employees to earn it's it's profits then I'm sorry but it shouldn't be needing volunteers? There are vast numbers of unemployed people in the UK so there was never any need to rely on migrant workers for such an unskilled job
Whilst I completely agree with you ST, getting those unemployed to do the work is the issue, they do not want to do it.
Surely volunteering is the wrong word presumably its paid work isnt it. Are you allowed to do it if you are on furlough and getting paid 80% by the way If I was out of work and needed the money I would do it as long as I got paid for doing it
Don't get me wrong I imagine that those who don't want to work now won't want to work in the future but I think there are going to be so many job losses that those who are do want work will have so little jobs to go round that people won't be able to be as choosy and will have to do much harder work in poorer conditions
It was your statement. It’s your job to justify it I’d be particularly interested in your scheme to move families from the urban regions to the country to do seasonal work, and move them back again. Or if you haven’t thought through a plan, just on a personal level, how far would you travel to do temporary work for minimum wage.
Well I believe over a million people are unemployed. I know that with many other minimum pay jobs the workers are literally bussed in from miles around.
It said the other day that farmers are trying to charter planes to fly workers in, you know the ones we don't need because the countrys already full
How far would you be bussed? and I’m aware of the numbers of low paid workers currently, and how many of them are from overseas too
I literally have seen an ad on my Facebook feed this morning for a local farm advertising for fruit pickers, 6 day shifts, hours of shift not specified, minimum wage. Between b******t and COVID-19 there’s a massive storm brewing up here later in the year, I can think of 17.4 million people who would love to do these jobs however
