Is that a true assessment of Colgan?

Don't get me wrong Albatross, you'd certainly know better then I do, but I'm just wondering whether Colgans obvious demise might have a lot to do with a very very very poor defence. I'm sure Colgan has been hailed as one of our best keepers for a long time on here not long ago and yet loads of people think he should now be hanging his head in shame.

I do find it confusing. Do you think he's lacking confidence in himself as a result of a pretty poor season for Barnsley and our defence or do you think stripped back to absolute basics, he has no place in Championship football?

    My view

is he contributes to the uncertainty and panic at set pieces cos he doesnt command his box. he's probably the best shot stopper in the league, seen some world class reaction saves that won us points, but I can remember games where it was inevitable that we were going to concede cos we were allowing the ball to bounce in our box. At Championship level, tight defences need a keeper behind them to have confidence when the ball comes in the box he's going to claim it. Its a given that Colgan will be on his line, so responsibility is left with the defenders to clear danger. I'd like to see us sign a keeper that will dominate the box on corners and set pieces, just that.

fair enough then. On the very few occasions I've seen him, for some bizzare reason I've had confidence in him, more so then quite a few other keepers we've had. He probably flatters to deceive or something. Having said that, I've seen much more defensive errors then keeping errors. I'm just wondering whether a championship quality defence would bring out a championship quality keeper form Colgan?

Keepers lacking confidence in defenders and themselves resort to 2 types of panic. Let's call them the David James and the Nick Colgan, I reckon it'd be easier to work with Nick.

They like to have 3 keepers in their squad, Pollit only signed a new

one year contract yesterday so I can't see them loaning him out straight away. Maybe later in the season if there have been no injuries but I can't see him being any sort of option now.

    I agree with SM .............

.... Colgan has been let down by bad defending on lots of occasions but for me he causes a hell of a lot of problems for the defence by not commanding his area.

For me, the fact that he stays rooted to his line, and hardly ever comes for a cross, makes things very difficult for the defence and in particular the centre halves. His distribution is also awful. He has been a good shot stopper at times but even that went tits up last season. Was exactly the same for Hibernian apparently 5 years ago or more so he ain't going to change.

Overall summary - not good enough - get shut

PS. And before all the 'pro-Colgan' folks start reminding me of his penalty saves at Cardiff can I just say .......... I know, I was there, but you could equally argue that the one that went through his legs (not the first and won't be the last) got us to the penalty shoot out in the first place. He's dodgy ........ FACT!

okay thanks, like I say haven't seem him enough to base anything really. Just fed up of good players being written off by fans after a poor season/spell only to go on elsewhere and bite us on the arse.

Doesn't seem like Colgan will be one of them.

would be a good loan signing

would probably command his area better than Colgan

thought he should have been called up to the England squad when he was on form for Wigan.
