It was Mel Smart, versus Joe Royle’s Oldham Athletic. As Mel approached the Brewery Stand ( East Stand) he was greeted with the chant of Eddie Eddie, (Eddie the Eagle) as Mel wore specs. He put the flag under his arm and waved at them. He drew the ref’s attention at one point in the game which resulted in Rick Holden getting booked. Mel told told me this next bit himself. Whilst laid in the bath having his after- match cigar, Joe Royle knocked on the changing room door and ref allowed him in. Royle started shouting and bellowing at the Ref and also demanded to know from Mel why his player was booked. Mel told Royle that he was also disappointed in the Ref as he had called for Holden to be sent off for calling him a ‘ four- eyed’ blind b*********d. At this Royle and the ref looked at each other and then Royle walked out.
