Hmm, well that's alerted everyone. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/barnsley-swoop-cameron-mcgeehan-summer-9730832
Think people will already be well aware of any interest. Expect us to face competition regardless in the summer if we do go in for him. Hopefully we can persuade him Barnsley is the best place to develop, as we have with other players in the past.
This is one deal I'm actually glad didn't go through. Given all the talk about avoiding unnecessary risks, this seems to fly in the face of that. Assuming that the story and the quoted figures are accurate, then we were prepared to pay £750k, rising to £1m, on a player with a broken leg who has no ability to influence the remainder of the season, so doesn't do anything to mitigate the loss of players in the window. That, to me, is a far riskier proposition than paying a similar amount for, say, Omar Bogle where the risk is that he's an unproven quantity at this level (for which the same applies to McGeehan anyway). I'm not saying that we should have bid for Bogle, and I've no idea if we were ever interested in him or not. It just an obvious comparison to make from the various rumours across the transfer window and the amount that he sold for. The point is that signing McGeehan now at that price seems like a huge risk against the apparent caution of all our other transfer dealings in the last month. This feels like it had all the potential to be another Richard Kell scenario. The rationale seems to be that we'll be priced out of getting him in the summer when he's fit, but I'd rather wait until then in this case and see what happens, and at least avoid paying 6 months wages on an injured player to try and save on a potential transfer fee.
Interesting read - seems it got as far as him coming up north for talks. I wonder what the stumbling block was?
That's going to be our problem now with any lower league signings. A club has a figure in their head they will sell a player for. Club comes in for that player and buys him. But if it's us the club coming in all off a sudden they think of the millions we've made, recent history at improving little known guys and all of a sudden are like **** if Barnsley want him we must be undervaluing him, so add on a few extra hundred thousand.
That's my concern. Although as he's not going to play again this season, I presume we can sign him before the summer anyway?
