he said something along the lines of, "Michael Essien knocks Ched Evans off the ball and absolutely rapes him!"

he probably meant to use the 'f' word but toned it down for the t.v.

I have heard it said loads of time around the amateur game, bit out of place on tv though.

You do know that rape doesn't have to mean forcing a woman into sex, don't you?

It can also mean, to strip something of possession or destroy, eg 'The soldiers raped the country'.

Again, something that has been totally blown out of proportion. I mean, really, do the newspapers have anything worthwhile to contribute to society these days? Waste of time.

    There you go

I didn't think Alan Pardew'sgrip on semanticswas so rich that he would choose to use the word 'rape' with such an antiquated meaning.

I think it's entirely possible that he meant it with that meaning

He took the ball off him, why is it so hard to believe that he was saying he raped him of the ball?

I see three meanings for the word rape, one is the plant, one is to rape a woman, the other is to strip something of its possession.

he did take the ball off him, hense he raped him of the ball.

What annoys me far more than his comment is the link that the media draws straight away to some completly unrelated taxi driver as though his crimes are far more important than any other woman getting raped throughout the country. It really annoys me when the media latches on to one story and treats it like something special when it is no worse than others. Take Jade Goody for example

    pffft!!

It sounds to me like you've consulted dictionary.com, read through the various meaningsand reverse-engineered the expression so it makes perfect literary sense -to you.

Unfortunately, theexpressive qualityof Alan Pardew'sdiction suggests that herarelyconsults a dictionary himself.

Of course, m'lord, when I said "rape" I meant "Essien seized the ball and carried it off with force". Ballox. The likelihood is that he was justregurgitating some distasteful training ground expression.

    A massive 35 complaints...

    Storm in a Tea Cup.

I'd love to know where these "rows" that "erupt" so frequently according to the facist media on thos country actually "erupt".
