By definition he can only have spent a maximum of 14 days a month at his 'second home', as i understand it it is the home you spent less than half your time at. So is it acceptable to then claim on a regular occurance exactly £400 a month on food for it?

Also £150 for a dvd recorder in his second home. Nice, i want one in my first fecking home.

No if it is for food. You eat to live, not to work.

For tax purposes there is some latitude in that the additional/marginal cost of food incurred in performing your duties away from home would normally be acceptable.

    Tricky one

    400 / 14 = £28 per day

Its easy to spend that and more if you are working long hours and so need to eat out :)

I've easily spend £30 a day on food when travelling on business

    Yeah, but

they aren't roaming around in a strange town / city trying to find somewhere reasonable to eat.

They have got subsidised food (*** including alcohol ***) in the house of commons canteen, so Ennis really has no excuse for running up such a high subsistence bill as a matter of routine...

    This is getting really silly

A KFC bargain bucket is rumoured to cost as much as £37.50 in parts of Greater London. Coupled with breakfast at Carluccio's (London equivalent of a greasy spoon cafe) and a £14 pint and pasty at dinnertime the guy will be way out of pocket.
Unless his second home is in Barnsley of course.

The only person to enter parliament with honest intentions was Guy Fawkes.

We're a family of four, and our monthly food bill is around £500. If he's claiming £400 for himself, I think he should go, and that he's a complete ****** to be honest.

No the claim is unacceptable. I and my partner feed a family of 5 for around £600 per month so quite how he manages £400 every half month is a joke. Not to mention that if he were at his 1st me he'd still have to buy food so to be claiming an additional £400 is ridiculous.

    No he aint..

    he`s a fat bast*rd. A greedy fat bast*rd.

I saw him for the first time since the last election on BFC website saying how good it is lowering season ticket prices the creeping ****. Just trying to get some good publicity after the MP`s expenses scandal.

Dare say I`ll see his wobbling chops within the next year when he wants my vote.

Our MP used to claim £400 a week for food so I don't know

if that is some sort of standard amount?

He now only claims £300 a month, don't know if it's a diet or what?

A couple of beers on expenses? So what? Most companies

would allow this. As Farnham says, if you have to mostly eat out then £400 isn't unreasonable.

The rules say he can claim £400. So he does. Fair enough.

I usually claim up to the maximum with my work when eating out. My company allows £5 for breakfast, £5 for lunch, and £20 for an evening meal. £30 a day. Like said above it isn't unreasonable.

It should be the system people are complaining about, not Ennis.

Expenses exists to ensure that you are not out of pocket

when you are on business. Nothing more and nothing less.

Claiming the maximum amount as a matter of routine isn't something I agree with. It is an abuse of the expenses system and and that is at the root of people's dissatisfaction with MP's.

    They are "eating in" though

They are in the "Works Canteen". Do you get expenses when taking lunch in the office?

The Commons Restaurant is already SUBSIDISED and yet they claim back a sum that equates to a NON-SUBIDISED amount.

Like I said above, if they were living out of a suitcase monday to friday, I think the sums aren't all that unreasonable.
