Fantastic news

So glad this came off. Well done Crystal and the others who badgered Eric. Maybe someone could post a link to the EDM on the BladesMad site - there were a few on there who thought Morgan was to blame. :D

Can anyone tell me what an early day motion is?

Early day motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few EDMs are actually debated. Instead, they are used for reasons such as publicising the views of individual MPs, drawing attention to specific events or campaigns, and demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view.

An MP can add their signature to an EDM to show their support. They can also submit amendments to an existing EDM. Although majority of EDMs are never debated, the group of EDMs known as 'prayers' may be debated. Prayers are motions to overturn Statutory Instruments (laws made by Ministers under powers deriving from Acts of Parliament). Further information on EDM procedure can be found in the Commons Information Office Factsheet Early Day Motions.

Up-to-date and searchable information on EDMs is available from the Early Day Motions database. The database is updated nightly with new EDMs and signatures added to existing EDMs. To look at EDMs from any session going back to 1989/90, select the session you want from the pull down menu in the top right hand corner of the screen. For EDMs and signatures prior to 1989/90, please contact the House of Commons Information Office (020 7219 4272)

Sent to MP for Hemel Hempstead

    Mike

As my local MP, I would like to urge you to sign this EDM raised by Eric Illsley MP. You will be aware of the FA's decision not to further punish Chris Morgan for his "challenge" on Iain Hume in a match between Barnsley and Sheffield Utd this season. This "challenge" resulted in Iain lying in intensive care with life threatening injuries, but Morgan only received a yellow card, despite the Barnsley Manager asking the referee (Andy D'Urso) to give Hume more protection.

The FA are hiding behind the FIFA rule that once a yellow card has been issued the national FA's cannot use TV evidence to upgrade the punishment. This violent challenge should be re-examined, as failing to do so will completely undermine the FA's credibility, especially with regards to their own ironically titled "Respect Campaign".

Furthermore, the FA have also shown that they are willing to upgrade punishments for challenges that, during the match, were deemed yellow card offenses. They did this recently in the case of Ben Thatcher and his violent challenge on Pedro Mendes. They just seem to be applying one rule to the higher profile Premiership and another for the Football League.

The FA should not be allowed to get away with underminding football as a sport and its player's safety in this way.

    Regards

    Paul Hicks

Sent to Keighley MP Ann Cryer.

    Dear Ann

Can I please urge you to sign the early day motion detailed above in support of the Barnsley player Iain Hume, who was viciously assaulted by a Sheffield United player in the derby game last month? Hume could easily have died in the incident and there is no guarantee as yet that he will be able to play again. His assailant got off with a warning from the referee on the day - the only cost to him a small disciplinary fine. Morgan and his club, Sheffield United, have shown very little contrition or humility over the whole incident, but the real shame lies with the Football Association. They have made a complete mockery of their 'Respect' campaign by failing to act - shameless cowardice on their part. Thanks for reading this - hopefully you can join the campaign to get the FA's spineless inaction overturned. Many thanks.

Anybody see the England v all blacks (rugby union), the England guy was sinned binned "sent off" for elbowing. My point is the blunts were saying footy is a man's game, not at the side of those lads it's not, yet it's deemed dangerous enough to be sent from the field!
